Buying phone for 15 yr old brother - Suggestions?

So my parents have decided its time to buy my brother a new phone and I have been tasked with finding a bargain.

We are looking at getting an Android with a budget of around $550 (preferably less than)

My brother has been set on getting a One + 3T which I have only just heard of and not familiar of. Does anyone here have one?

Suggestions for best bang for buck?

You missed a bunch of EOFY ebay sales (someone's even asked for a phone ~$500 range just like you), where there were the likes of the LG V20, LG G6 (good phones, though I'm hesitant to support LG after having bought 2 G4s) and the Samsung Galaxy S8 (though >$600+)

These would have been grey imports (dual sims are useful if they can support dual 3g/4g as 2g networks should be gone by now and I can run a shared optus (grandfathered and gone now) data sim in a 2nd slot and a cheap prepaid in the other) though if you were after something local

OnePlus is a chinese company and afaik their phones were aimed at the US market, I'd probably hit up whirlpool and quick read of it, looks like the phone doesn't have Band 28 if that is important to you; https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2622093

    • Yeh I probably would have stretched the budget to get the S8 as I did see the deal but this only came up about buying him a phone a few days ago..

Dual sim cards probably isn't something a 15 yr old needs haha

I might have to do more reading, we mainly use Vodafone who don't use band 28 apparently so that should not be much of a problem.

  • I got a moto g5+ 32gb from the ebay sales for $309. I'm quite happy with it. it's very stock android which makes me like it even more. Everything just works well. My only gripe is how big the bezels are, I don't see why they need to be so big compared to some of the newer models.

    • Cheers might check it out, he was after something with abit more storage though.

  • I use the OP3T (bought for $520AUD about 6 months ago). Great phone and would recommend that to anyone wanting a mid range phone.
They have stopped production for this model as the new model is about to be release. This means the price will go down…hopefully

Note that you can only get this via import and it won't be 100% compatible with AUST network. I live and work metro VIC and reception has been 4g consistently.
Do your readings before you purchase. Buyer beware. The phone and it's tech specs are great.

This means the price will go down…hopefully

Strong doubts about this one. Demand is high but supply is artificially restricted, and because of how expensive the new 1PFive is, people will continue to buy the OP3T instead so you won't see any price drops on the current generation as long as there is demand.

The other phone to consider is a Galaxy S5, which has been around $500+ during EOFY's. deals are all finished though..

      • Yeh seems like there is a variant between the different models and would prefer something with AUS warranty if possible.

Will definitely need to do more reading..

I have the HTC 10 and I think it is a great phone - little bloatware, quick software, great audio and camera. It is currently around $500 on eBay for grey import.

Alternatively, the Oneplus 3T is a really good value phone. I remember reading that it has all the bands for Vodafone but you can check that here- http://willmyphonework.net.

I'd recommend both phones to anyone.

    • $599 for the HTC 10 in Grey at JB Hi-Fi if you want Australian warranty

    • Yeh that works as we only use Vodafone at home, optus is horrible were we live.

Not an Android but an iPhone SE is a great phone for that age bracket, and unlike an Android it will likely receive regular updates from Apple for 4+ years.

    • I bought the SE my self for my side gig, great phone I must admit but he has had a hand me down iPhone 5 for quite a while so is looking for a change to android.

  • LeTV

  • Just get the ones you can get from Woolworths

Everyone's given some great advice and recommendations so I thought I'd give a slightly different one.

Honestly I'd just get the one he asked for, even if its slightly more (seems to be about $599 range?).

I always get appointed to buy or recommend a device for family, and they ask me for something like a $1500 range computer, and then they give me $600 and even after the best ozbargaining and research theres only so much that 600 can spread.

Even if you buy a phone thats even better then the one they wanted at a better price, whenever this phone starts to slow down or a random error occur they will sit there wondering "hmm hmm I bet the phone I had my eyes on might not of done this" in a grass is always greener sort of thing.

    • Point taken, I do feel that he will kind of let down if he doesn't get the One Plus 3 as it happens all the time for him. But he is 15 so still needs some direction in terms of purchasing items in particular at this price range.

Will suck if it doesn't last him a while and he will be equally disappointed.

  • You don't feel obligated to look up LG, Samsung, iphone only. Specially when you are looking for reasonable cheap price phone, other mobile company might be better for you.

  • Update: So my mum went on her own way and purchase the One+ 3T from DWI. Has arrived and definitely surprised by the quality and operation of this device, beats my Huawei P9 thats for sure.

I am a little worried with the warranty from DWI but I suspect it may be a similar case for most sellers of the One+ devices.

My brother is over the moon with it and I hope it lasts him a long while.
