My N36L Is on Its Last Legs. Has Anyone Tried The New G10 Microserver?

It looks nice, but I'm wondering if anyone's seen one or any good prices on one.

EDIT: I should mention the drop of onboard RAID doesn't worry me - I use a card for that anyway. I haven't seen what the cable running is like though, it's usually pretty tight. :(

  • What's the issue your N36L is exhibiting?

    • Getting random hard reboots after a few hours of use. Run it as barebones as possible with one known working stick of RAM, and it's still doing it. Looking like either the CPU or (more likely) the mainboard. :(

  • its also an $800 device being brand new

    wait for drops

    • True, given where I'm at I guess the correct answer is to replace it with another cheap N36L.. I'm just keen to see if anyone has experience with it.

      • i assume you're a pro since you have an N36 so you roll your own nas

i've been in this situation before

i had a nas about to blow up so i quickly made as nas out of old PC parts and put hdds in them to transfer the data

then i waiting until i got a new proper nas like a gen8 or an ml110 and then i transfered over

not pretty but not $800 either

      • I had an N36L and replaced it recently with a ML10v2. It's a bit bigger and louder but I'm generally happy with it (it sits in a spare room).

        • Interested in how you find this. I'm all thumbs and big hands and I hate working on my N36l And N40l. I'm looking for a full size replacement as it will sit under the desk anyway. I find them both under-powered as I use them alternatively as HTPC and NAS but running Win 7 so I can use all my downloading/media/conversion/meta-tagging/renaming software and not have to stress my brain with learning Linux etc. Really looking to replace the 2 with one more powerful machine with about 4 bays and my 4 bay JBOD NAS.

I had a PSU die on one of my N36L's. I had been using PICO PSUs on them but for some reason I swapped back to the stock PSU on one of them, and it crapped out several months later. The other one has been running fine 24/7 on the PICO since the first ever microserver ozb deal (ahem which was posted by me ahem).

Anyway mine are too slow for what I want to do now - running a few VMs. And wouldn't you know, I missed out on all the gen8 microservers and ML10v2 deals dammit.

The microservers have been awesome, but a little long in the tooth these days. Guess I will just keep running my main one as a NAS until it dies and just use other hardware for VMs for now. It would be nice to have an all in one lowish power box though. Hopefully a deal will present itself one of these days.

Amen to that. I bought an N36l and N40l and would like to upgrade with the sort of deals that were rife a few years back. Thanks for encouraging those competitive sales early on. I certainly got my money's worth as both of mine have been running mostly 24/7 since those early deals.

  • G10 is a step backwards, you're much better off getting a G8.
