New Laptop, USB Type C Not Working. Claim DOA or Get It Repaired?

New laptop, USB type C not working. Claim DOA (dead on arrival) or get it repaired?

I bought a new laptop from last month eBay sell. ASUS GL553VD. Anyway, I love it. Few days ago, I find the type c port not working as I connect it to my Nexus 5X, nil signs of connection or charging. I contact eBay seller they suggest me to contact ASUS first. I called ASUS, they offer two options.

1 Send it direct to ASUS for repair. They will arrange pick up.

2 Contact seller. Send it back to seller. Seller will help me claim DOA.

I have no experience with these warranty stuff. So just wonder, which option is better? DOA has 14 days period so I feel that claim DOA is better? Although I have no idea what are the consequences of claim DOA. Is that for refund or replacement?

Seller said claim DOA takes longer for my laptop to be send back to me. ASUS factory will do test and repair. I am not looking for a refund. I am happy to keep the same laptop though I may feel annoyed thinking it's been repaired shortly after I bought it.

Thanks for reading. Any advice?

  • I would DOA it, no question. Generally DOA will replace with a new one, but confirm first. Repair might mean replacement with refurb.

    • Thanks. Will confirm with seller later.

  • DOA of course - why buy something new that doesn't work to get it refurbished. you should get a new product that works out the box.

did you try a different cable? Ive had cheapo cables not charge my phone and stuff when plugged into USB - a better cable has fixed the problem.

I also had an issue with my old Nexus tablet where I had to use the cable that came with the tablet or else it wouldn't detect anything.

Thanks for the tip. I am using the original cable that came with the phone. It has two ends both are type C. I will try it on my friend's computer to see if it's the problem with my cable and phone. Currently I have no other cable to test it with my computer. If the cable works on my friend's computer not mine, I will claim DOA then.

  • Claim DOA first (as the date is logged under 14 days of purchase) hence will guarantee a replacement.
Then test and see if the cable works with your friends laptop.
You can try to do a Win update and it might update the driver for the USB-C and work.
Regardless, if you are using a genuine cable from the manufacturer, "in normal operating conditions" it should work with any USB-C.
You shouldn't have to spend time to tinker with a brand new $1K+ laptop to get it working.

    Cheers

  • I would also DOA it. Given that it's meant to be fully working out of the box, I'd be pretty pissed off it if I was in your situation. As mentioned above, you might end up getting a refurb if you choose the repair option and that's not good.

Though I do have a question that errs on more the side of Consumer Law; in a case like this where the item is DOA, is the seller responsible for the shipping costs, or is the buyer? I would assume it's the seller as I'd expect something to work perfectly as it's bought brand new, but I might be mistaken.

    • Not sure about other cases. My seller emailed me a "eParcel POST RETURNS Label", so I need to print it and stick it then go to post office to send it. No charge. Guess seller is paying that? Maybe later they will charge me but I don't know yet.

Though it's not too far from me, I may go there myself instead of shipping it back.
