Health Insurance for Dental Work

Hi, i realised today that I need to go to the dentist, I probably need a clean and maybe some fillings. My wife says she also wants to go. My kids are covered by the medicare dental scheme.

Is it worth signing up for extras insurance before I go? Does anykne have any recommendations about the best insurer for dental? It's not urgent that I go but would prefer to go in the next month so waiting periods will be something I would need to consider too.

Thank you

    Hi,

For "Extras only" you are usually looking at a two month wait from joining.

I use https://www.hif.com.au/health-insurance/extras-cover/default… and levels (other than Vital Options) offer different levels of Dental Cover.

    • Thanks, so would this mean that fillings and cleaning would have a 2 month waiting period:

If you aren’t switching from another health fund, our standard waiting periods are:

Up to 12 months for dental (general limited)
12 months for dental (major) benefits, blood glucose/pressure monitors, external prostheses/medical appliances, nebulisers/humidifiers, orthotic appliances and psychological consultations
36 months for assisted reproduction drugs and hearing aids
2 months for all other services - although these are often waived as a new member promotion, see our Special Offers page for more details

I'm looking at the Extras Cover I have which is Saver Options:
        https://www.hif.com.au/health-insurance/extras-cover/extras-…

If you aren’t switching from another health fund, HIF standard waiting periods are:

A 12 month waiting period applies for the surgical removal of teeth under General Limited Dental. (Item numbers 323, 322 and 324).
2 months for all other services - although these are often waived as a new member promotion, see their Special Offers page for more details.

If you select a level of Cover higher that Saver Options, you receive a Higher Level of Cover and more Extras covered.

Probably just get a couple of quotes and pay out of pocket, I had extras only with teachers health, the amount you spend you need to factor in Gap payments and how much you will pay out and never receive and your financial situation

If you have a uni near by, that has dentistry, they normally have a clinic. I'm at CSU Orange and i thinks its like $35 for check up, clean and scale and about $15 per filling.

Otherwise extras only insurance. Shop around, some offer more than others. If you are connected with a uni in anyway, then unihealth isnt too shit

    • That's a good idea, I am near the University of Newcastle. I might give them a call today and find out costs.

      • Pretty sure UON have the clinic at Ourimbah, from memory limited services, but worth a call. I know it use to be $20 for checkup clean for students / staff

@onetwothree: Ah cool. Sounds like they do everything you need (incl fillings). Just give them a buzz.

Just remember they are students been overseen by a professor. They are very competent (must be before they are allow anywhere near a person). The only downside is it can be alittle slow when they do there work (experience from CSU clinic), because they need to do it by the book. I think a checkup, clean, fluoride and filling should be done in 1 or 2 sessions. CSU does a 2 work, full workup, incl xrays if needed, then normally go back a week later for an hour and get the work finished. Just to have an idea how we work here anyways.

Best of Luck and if you can, once done, just post the location and cost in the section you wrote question. Alot of people google or search these and very little know the joys of uni's. (For future info, some sydney unis do cheap / free optoms and a range of services, you'll need to google each uni. :)

@Pharmacy:thanks just tried calling them but no answer, I know they don't take appointments during the holidays but do you think they wouldn't have anyone there to book appointments as well?

          I'll try them again later.

        • @onetwothree: Yeh, just try again tomorrow. If no luck ring (02) 4921 5000 (main number), just ask what is the deal. They will be able to see what is happening on their end (if its closed for this week) etc. I do get a feeling that they might still be on uni break at UON.

        • @Pharmacy: thanks, I actually got through and made an appointment. A one off fee of $50 which covers the initial consultation, check up, clean and xrays. Apparently only the year 3 students can do fillings and they only come on certain days. The fee covers you for 12 months.
