Do You Pack Your Bags at The Checkout at ALDI?

What do you guys think of people who load their bags while at the checkout? I do this all the time and I can feel the hate - but I keep doing it. No one's ever told me to not do it.

I'm confused, why is it rude to pack your own bags?

    • +1

Something to do with keeping up with the checkout operator.
There's two other voting options that I probably should have added. Put all the groceries back into your trolley then:
      1. Bag them at the counter near the door.
      2. Bag them when you get to your car.

      • +6

Your poll is flawed though…you specifically determined that packing bags at the checkout would be rude.

        • Is there another reason why people don't pack their bags at the checkout?

        • @thepigs:
The post below literally says you have to be fast!

    • +1

I think its rude, I will give you stares each time unless you are freakishly fast. They have a packing bench for you to work with at the front.

      • +1

then we don't have a problem, for me the limiting factor is the checkout person. thanks

        • +1

Are you sure? So despite packing your groceries into bags in your trolley, you have to wait for the checkout operator to ring up the next item before you can pack it? Or are they deliberately slowing down so they don't overload the little bench?

        • +1

@kiitos: don't worry, sometimes I don't even use bags at all!

        • +2

          @Savas:
Ah, sweat pants with elastic cuffs. Got it.

  • +8

I do it, but you have to work very fast to keep up with the checkout operator. I have the bags all opened at the ready. Bonus points if all your cold items go in their own cool bag.

    • +9

exactly. me and the gf make it a game. we load the conveyor belt with items grouped as they will be bagged. We then have the bags open in the trolley and can load each bag one at a time. With the two of us we have yet to encounter anyone that can scan faster than we can pack haha

      • same same!

      • +4

I feel sorry for you if that's the kind of games your girlfriend wants to play with you :/

      • +1

we load the conveyor belt with items grouped as they will be bagged.

I thought everybody did this anyway?

    • +2

All the people on here that say "Its not rude cause I keep up with the checkout operator"… I have news for you, the checkout operator is either new or very likely slowing down to keep pace with you.

My partner and I both grab groceries with both hands as quickly as they scan them and just throw the items back in the trolley and 9 out of 10 experienced Aldi checkout operators can scan an entire trolley full of groceries in seconds, like seriously fast - they can be like lightning if they sense you are up for it.

I mean like two of us basically scraping handfuls of groceries back into the trolley as fast as we can and the operator will just keep them flying across the scanner at you!

There is a reason for the packing bench, and I don't even both with that, I leave all my bags in the boot of my car, and just pop them straight out of the trolley into the bags already in the boot, simple and doesn't hold anyone up.

    • +1

I do this. I love the challenge. I use an ikea bag and go through the spatials while i'm in the queue. I'm an architect, born boring.

  • +1

it's not hard to keep up, although I typically only do a small shop (1-2 bags)

only time I buy more is when there is more than one of us = easy to keep up

  • +1

I guess if you are fast, you can. There is also something called manners. The people behind you has enough manners to refrain from telling you off.

    • +1

      enough manners

      More like fear.

  • I used to compete with the operator to see if i could keep up with him and finish loading the bags on time. No prizes though

  • Depends. Only do it if we can keep up with the checkout person. Usually we can because we normally only get 1 or 2 bags worth of stuff at a time.

I think it's pretty bad manners/etiquette to slow down the queue doing this if you can't keep up. They give you benches to pack your stuff just metres away, how hard is it?

    • For those that use public transport to shop, you need to know how much to buy/carry. So a Trolley is not really an option.

Even with a trolley you just end up with a jumbled mess. Some thought on packing and how it is processed through the scanner makes the world of difference.

Never unload top first on the belt, top goes last.

  • +1

2 Blue Aldi Cold bags full, plus 2 loafs of bread + eggs on top which go in the backpack later, always manage to keep up with the operator.

The key is, unload your items in the reverse order to be scanned, so how you packed your bags while shopping, so it goes in as you first packed them.

It does help that I'm there when they first open and let people go ahead who only have 1-2 items.

  • +1

Really just depends on what I have. If it's a trolley full, then i'll either pack at the packing area or in the car. If it's a small haul then i'll just chuck it all in the ikea bag and sort it at the car if I need to

  • +1

rude is when you pass the items to your 4 year old to pack for you at the checkout. I think what ever is quicker and common .sense

  • Just pack it yourself - If they aren't going to do it then they can wait while you pack it. And if anyone tells you off - tell them to EAD!

    • -1

yup, if they don't help you then pack as you wish, EAD

  • C. Never buy enough in one shop at Aldi that requires a bag.

  • +4

Generally speaking the long bench opposite the checkouts is where you are meant to pack everything - if you are doing a big shop you put everything back into your trolley and pull out your bags / pack over there.

  • Both. I load the heavy items first so they're first in the bag. I always end up falling behind so I throw the rest in the trolley and finish bagging at the counter

  • +4

walk into aldi scan the aisle for a box thats nearly empty, put shopping into there, when at counter quickly put shopping into box pay and leave

    • so much this.

    • Can't find an empty box?

I've seen a guy empty out diapers, fill the box with a mountain of chicken breast fillets and head to the cashier with it on his granny trolley. I assumed he worked at a nearby restaurant or similar.

  • +1

It 'depends' if I only have a few items aka under 1 green bag worth, then yes I'll pack the bag at the checkout.

    Otherwise, everything into the trolley.

  • +4

Or, you get stuck behind the person that takes their time packing, querying the price of things and changing their minds at the checkout, then make everyone wait until they are finished packing. ONLY THEN do they ask again how much the total is, then hunt around for their purse, taking their time finding the right card, only to be declined and having to try again with another one or make part payments on multiple cards. If paying by cash, repeat fumbling for purse again, but never finding that last elusive 5c piece. Each time with a stunned look of surprise on their face that they have been asked to actually PAY for their goods, never having their payment at the ready.

The whole time I am standing there behind them, mouth wide open in disbelief at their inconsiderate behaviour to the hoardes of people in the line behind them. I've already got a fistful of cash or a credit card out in anticipation for when it is my turn. I wish more people treated the checkout and ordering procedure more like when dealing with the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. Quick-as-you-can, step up, do the transaction with no extraneous interaction, and step off for the next person. Simples!

  • i do. i just have one big tub i bought at aldi, and i scoop my items in instantly and it's easy as piss. Surprised i never see anyone else do it tbh

  • +3

I pack mine at the checkout, BUT I have trolley bags that sit on the edge of the trolley. No fiddling with bags, just flinging them in - it's just as quick as not packing so I keep up with the operator. There is one operator who will pause, say "you ready?" and then scan as fast as they can - they haven't bested me yet lol.

I did try packing normal bags at the checkout once and i had things banking up and falling off the end of the bench into the trolley - never again!!

    • Yeah, those trolley bags are great. Use them all the time.

    • Yes I have the trolley bags too and love them! So technically yes I pack my bags at the checkout but that's what these bags are designed for isn't it??

      • Yes, those ones! I get asked every time I shop where to buy them. I feel like I should be getting commission!

      • Hey they are cool, tapering sizes so they can stack inside each other for storage too! I have a similar one that actually clips onto the side wires with elastic running between (not the rigid sticks in these) which allows me to collapse it and roll it up into a small baton (looks like a small folded umbrella) when I'm done. http://image.cn.made-in-china.com/prod/698-26734075.jpg

  • +2

I have 2 shopping trolley bags that clip onto the sides of the trolley. So as the operator is throwing stuff at me it goes straight back into the trolley (bags).

I get looks of amazement from the people behind me when I can just stroll out the store without having to move over to the counter and repack…

Or stand at my car and repack… I just lift the bags out the trolley and into the boot.

  • +1

i love that this is a concern and people say the world is going to shit

  • If you shop at Aldi or any other store where the cashier does not pack your goods into bags, then you have to put up with however long it takes for a shopper to pack their own bags. Otherwise go to another major supermarket where the cashier packs your stuff into bags. I know people who refuse to go to self serve counters because they rather keep more people/cashiers in jobs.

  • Yes, it's extremely rude!!! Don't you understand how much aldi values it's customers!

    Here's what you do

1 They scan your products and all you have to do is quickly shove everything into your trolley, as fast as you can (don't worry if your going to slow they'll tell you, from the comfort of their chair) and what ever you do don't pack your bags! Then pay them

2 Run to the back of the shop and pack your bags yourself so you won't be in the way when they repeat the process

3 leave and tell your friends about your shopping experience with aldi and how much they appreciate their costumers eeehor eeehor (oh and don't forget your $2 in the trolley)

This is what makes them so competitive! (Stupid Coles and Woolworth they'll never last)

  • It's only rude if you're slow - hate those sobs.

I'm pretty fast and strategically place my items on the conveyor belt. However, on my off days the guys always help me pack.
