WorkLife - A Better Way to Find a Job

Hey everyone,

As a job seeker, I've found that a lot of jobs are "silo'd" in individual companies websites. This is especially prevalent in local/state government jobs, with a seperate job site for every council (some advertise on Seek, but not all).

So, I've been working on something for the past few months now. It's called WorkLife and it lives here: http://worklife.azurewebsites.net/. It scrapes, at the moment, one job website for the QLD Government, but I will be adding more job sites soon.

It's designed to make searching and finding a job as easy and as painless as possible. It does this by a keyword search - you just throw a word in and the listings that don't contain that phrase will go away.

This is probably only useful in Queensland at the moment, as SmartJobs is only for the Queensland Government. By all means though, suggest some more sites to scrape if you want to.

The site should be self explanitory, but here are a few things:

  • On mobile, tap the "pencil" down the bottom right to slide out the menu. You can filter by level, location, or employer.
  • As you browse jobs, if you see one you like, tap "Add to list" to favorite it. When you're done, open the menu and email the list to a specified email address.

Like I said, really early preview, so things might (will probably) break. For sure, suggest improvements if you can think of any.

It's my first foray with doing something like this, so any feedback is welcome. And if you find a job that you'd apply for on the site, let me know! It's good to know when your stuff is working :)

Cool stuff, why not put a vanity domain over it instead of keeping the Azure hostname?

    • Definitely will get a proper name and domain name (subject to availability lol). It's just in the initial stages that I've left it out.

      It'll get SSL too.

      • LetsEncrypt extension on Azure Web Apps works great

  • Are these jobs not scraped by Indeed already? I found the first one on there, Physio in Brisbane specialising in spinal cord).

    • Awkwardly I didn't know what Indeed was until you mentioned it, haha.

So you're right, Indeed does scrape out those jobs. I've found that, in my own case, I might want to look for a role in application packaging. But the role title might be "Project Officer". So I wouldn't effectively know that role is what I'm after unless I went trawling through the extended description.

I also think that (and I could be wrong about this) users like to scroll through stuff, like how Instagram or Facebook works (especially on phones). I don't come on ozbargain and search for deals, I just get a list of deals. WorkLife is a bit like that, and a few times I've used it, I've seen interesting roles that I normally wouldn't search for (but their description has made the role appealing).

      • Ok I think I get the difference here. I just added a few terms. For example, "application packaging" (blank); "packaging" (blank); "nurse" (results); "design" (results). I noticed that with "design" the results seem to be off-topic, like "Echocardiography" and "Pharmacist". Those were the top two.

Make it like Tinder where they are shown a job and they swipe left or right.
When swiping right, shows more like that job, left shows less.

  • Nice work, I agree many of the government jobs are tucked away. This site is a good addition for future version

  • Great idea but as said previously there plenty of scrapers out there already, Indeed being one of the more popular ones.

If you are targeting QLD, here's a list of sites I've used previously
    *Smart Jobs - QLD
    *APS Jobs - Federal
    *Local Government - QLD
