Negotiating on a Certified Pre-Owned Mercedes

Hey everyone, was hoping you could help me out with something

I'm familiar with the tactics surrounding negotiating for new cars, and with other dealerships. I'm after a 2012 C200. These are going for $30000-$33000 drive away.

I'm certain I want this car, and I was wondering how much I could hope to negotiate. Are Mercedes dealerships any different to your average dealership selling pre-owned vehicles?

From what I've read, you can a pretty big discount on a new Mercedes (up to 20%). Can the same be said of pre-owned vehicles?

If you have any experience on this please let me know!

Thanks

a lot of money for a oldish car, May I ask why you like the previous generation c class, price?

    • Coupe or sedan?

      • Sedan

    • You're right.

I drove one and really liked it. I could never justify spending more than that on a newer car.
I am 100% aware it's not a wise purchase financially, but it won't hurt me and that's the car I want

Good question, all I can say is I borrowed a friends and I haven't enjoyed driving anything else in that price range more thus far

  • Its only certified if it has a rtd sticker

  • All dealers are in the game to extract the maximum they can from the buyer - regardless of the brand

    • Yep. But the percentages might be different from dealer to dealer. I was hoping someone had experience with negotiating with this one in particular

  • buy a camry and then rebadge it with mercedes badges bought off ebay

  • I don't know why you want such an old Mercedes. A new Passat for similar money would be a better car.

    • Think about it this way; I could buy a new Mercedes but I don't want to take a big hit on depreciation in the first 3 years.

Would rather buy one 5ish years old.

      • That doesn't in any way change the validity of what I said. You are looking at a very old car, 3 models old infant. If you want to avoid depreciation and get something actually up to date, instead of what really is an expensive old jalopy, then buy a 1 year old C class. Don't buy an old heap of junk.

        • You are looking at a very old car, 3 models old infant.

a five year old vehicle isn't what a reasonable person would call very old. the rms requires a safety check for vehicles that are five years old or more. it used to be three years (someone please confirm).

        • 3 models old infant.

the w204 was only replaced by the w205 in 2014-2015.

        • @whooah1979: yes, but there were two iterations of the w204. He is talking about the pre facelift model.

        • @Burnertoasty:
          i see.

        • @Burnertoasty:

Actually the major facelift was in 2011.

      • Smart man! The main reason for depreciation is warranty. Once the 3 years is over, warranty falls. However, Mercedes does allow Pre Owned Vehicles from dealerships additional warranty.

Except the "certified preowned" warranty isn't underwritten by Mercedes. Its underwritten by an insurance company. Sales tactic used to extract additional funds from you and "sell" you a warranty insurance policy bundled into the vehicles price.

        • @Matt P: Nope, I know for a fact, just like every other head office, if its under warranty, head office supplies damaged/faulty parts. And is reimbursed by their head-head office (In this case Germany).
If thats the type of insurance you're refering to then yeah, sure.

          ACCC ;)

        • @ZoldyckR: yeah you're probably right, you probably do know more than a bloke who has been in the F&I part of the motor industry for 15 years

        • @Matt P:
I do. I've worked for majority of all our automotive head offices aswell..
          Nice try there.

  • buy a good example, privately, low k's, with perfect service history

buying from a stealership adds NOTHING, apart from $$$ to you

we've purchased from both private sellers and dealership. dealership wins every time. our last vehicle was even cheaper from a dealership compared to the listed price by private sellers.

one would be wise to pass on this.

      • ok….i'm from Vic, did i miss something?

        • i see. just in case you ever buy from sydney. stay away from lidcombe, auburn, berala, regents park, yagoona, chullora, greenacre, bankstown, punchbowl, wiley park, lakemba, granville, merrylands, guildford and those smaller burbs in the cluster.

        • @whooah1979: Why. I live in one of those suburbs. And recently sold my A4 Quattro. What is wrong with me.

        • @blawler05: Stereotypes and generalisation.

  • Geez beepec - $30K??? madeness - look at this low k AMG C200 - i reckon it will cost about $14,500

  • spent some time reading alternative reviews by john cadogan. he recommended kia or hyundai and specific other models. one was the liberty. I bought a new one at EOFY for $29000. John also get you a good deal. read his web site. he demystified the cons in the industry. assessed all brands for reliability, and repairs and service and mercedes did not look good. Given his honesty I prefer to deal with him and buy through him for best discount, even a mercedes. [new cars only so far.]
other experts, brokers seem compromised. He abuses the industry freely and seem painfully honest.

    • I went through the same thing as OP a few years back. The problem is he already drove the Merc. The average Subaru is a tough sell once you've done that.

Probably best to have asked this question last week with the EOFY and dealers chasing quotas and sales. Great car though, I've got a 2011 C250 and as you said the drive is outstanding. I haven't had an issue in the 5 years since I bought it either.

    • Finally an answer that relates to my question! May I ask if you bought it new? And were mercedes good with negotiating?

      • I bought it certified second hand from a Merc Dealer with 6000 kms. It was listed at 52k but I negotiated to 49k about a week before EOFY, then the dealer rang me and said if I waited until July 1st he would give me another $1000 cashback. Guess they hit their sales target in the meantime.

I don't think there is a big advantage buying from a dealer over private though, I'd say just look for the best price for the car that fits your criteria regardless.

        • Thanks man!
I'm only buying from a dealer for the warranty honestly
