Um… Japan is not USA!
SIM for Japan is totally different proposition. Discussed in so many Japan SIM deals. Unless you have the paperwork to stay long term, only data is allowed by Government, is expensive, & often has daily cap.
The price of any service or product like this specific to another country is irrelevant if you're not going there.
A b-mobile 5GB 21d SIM is 3480¥ = au$40.
There's always the JP Mobile (Yokoso) SIMs. $40/15 days or $45/31 days with first 3.5GB/4GB at full speed then shaping to 256K.

I'll tell you how these go. Bought the 31 day one for $35 with the eBay sales going on lately.
This deal is for a SIM in a Pocket WIFI for those needing one.
Plenty of options.
Recently back from 4 weeks in Japan.
Didn't bother with data SIM & used app for free WiFi at convenience stores, train stations, tourist spots & accommodation. Worked fine for my needs. But I've been to Japan many times in last 10 years.https://shizuokatourism.com/2015/12/01/fee-wifi-rental-for-f…
You can get Pocket WiFi for free anyway.
@StrayfireX:
Was staying in Shizuoka prefecture - some great spots for nature like Izu Peninsula (Australian Embassy has beach house there). This type of offer has previously been posted as deal. Conditions apply. May suit some.
Also Vodafone on post-paid has $5/d option including voice calls.
Japan is not USA!
Wait … what?
🌎 It's true. I looked it up in my Atlas 🌎
lol we have to bring up a different country?
China. 30GB for 10dollar for a month. how about that.
Japan mobile data is always expensive for foreigner. But I've heard they are giving out free sims for traveller for free data lately.
Neat! Where?
Was being promoted mainly to Chinese tourists when I checked a few months back.
Discussed in Japan SIM deal.
Best price guarantee with jw so you might have some leverage, have used them on the most expensive plan and was great.
when I was in Japan 2 weeks ago I was using a 15 day @ 200Mb per day data sim which cost 4,000 at Narita Airport (Terminal 2, in the basement -where you go to get the train - at the bottom of the escalators immediately to the left are 3 sim dealerships. the middle dealer had the best deal for the time I was there) I went with the 200Mb a day capped option rather than a 1Gb data sim as I was concerned my phone might decide to back itself up and use the entire 1gb at once. capped to 200mb was enough for me. any major interwebing was done at accomodation where free wifi was available.
The b-mobile 5GB 21d SIM got good reports from travellers I met in May 3480¥ = au$40
I just used free WiFi at convenience stores via app, or at accommodation.
So this is how reckful live stream irl in Japan. Damn
Dude I had no idea what reckful was and never watched anything on twitch. I am obsessed with Japan however and going for my second time in September.
I just spent last night and today in a worm hole of watching reckful, andy and EXBC in Japan. Was a weid yet wonderful experience
If you book accommodation using airbnb, the property usualy provide free pocket wifi
Not at any I stayed in, but I'm cheap.
Yep both of mine did
I am in helsinki and will arrive in tokyo tomorrow morning for 13hours. What's the "best" option for me if I need a bit data?
Search for free apps to access free WiFi, airport free WiFi. Not worth the hassle to setup & register for such a short time.
I used Japan Connected Free WiFi in May:
Save yourself the hassle of user registration for each new hotspot.
Connect to free Wi-Fi easily at major train stations and airports, businesses like convenience and department stores, tourist spots, and many more locations.
It's just about ok.13hours… With time spent at airport, travelling, etc that's not much time. If arriving at Narita airport, hop a train to Narita & enjoy the shrine, pagoda, parks, food - much handier than busy Tokyo. Don't want to miss your flight.
But this will be to late a reply ;-(
Thanks a lot.
It's exactly what I am doing, using free WiFi to reply. Wasted a few hours this morning in the airport and finally decided to go to haneda first to store my luggage. And then jumped on the train to shibuya. Also want to go to ginza and asakura for that temple if time allows. That's seeing a lot in a small time ;-)
Enjoy Japan🎏
NTT have launched a free data SIM for foreigners: https://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/info/media_center/pr/201…
Free plan limited to 128kbps, limited amounts of unrestricted data can be got with ads/surveys, or by outright paying.
Light on details since it was scheduled to be launched today.
Probably this is the one I've heard of.
:)
i used wilh-ma last year when I went to Tokyo and I have nothing but good things to say about them. efficient with the postage of the wifi modem in Australia before I left, the device worked great and they gave me a satchel to ship it back when I got home.
only suggestion I have for travellers is to consider a powerbank to use with the wifi router as we smashed the battery.I have plenty of data on my own plan, so can anyone suggest why this would be better than say the $5 roaming option from Vodafone? (This is what i intend to use for my brief stay)
Suggested in other Japan SIM deals, you can make & receive calls, not just data. I commented on it above. An easy option for those with Vodafone postpaid plans. Great for short stays.
I looked at the coverage and it's pretty good. will this work if you go to multiple countries with the same modem? I can't see any costings for different countries.
Better get a Starhub Prepaid Happy Roam SIM which is much cheaper than this one.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/316426That SIM is sold in Singapore!
Only of use if travelling through Singapore. A handy SIM covering a number of Asian countries. Like many, I fly from Australia to Japan. This deal is for a Pocket WiFi including SIM. Depends on what you want. Other options have been given in discussion.
Details of networks, regulations on Foreigners using networks (data only unless have an alien registration to purchase a voice SIM), etc see

30 11700 $141.19 $4.71One of many options. No local delivery like this deal - Pick up your ordered goods at your hotel (or post office in the airport) in Japan.
Data is similar to this deal - unlimited.
But is still over twice the price of a SIM for 18 days. eg $40 for 21 days, BUT Data is limited to 5GB
If you take a 4G phone (& powerbank), set tethering on if others need access, you end up with much the same use as a Pocket WiFi. (Used to use those devices.) Heavy data use is then best done at accommodation free. Even buying a cheap 4G phone here to use in that setup & getting SIM should be cheaper.
This deal is probably good for those staying only days @$5.50/d.
Depends on your requirements.
If you're with Vodafone it costs $5 a day extra to use your phone as you would at home. Worked well for me and much less complicated
including unlimited data ? I doubt it
It's $5/d extra - on top of the postpaid plan already paying for back in Oz. Easiest option for those with Vodafone postpaid.
So amount of data & costs depends on your Australian plan.
Plus you can make & receive your normal voice calls, unlike SIMs etc available in Japan! (There's always VOIP with Data SIM.)
Good for those not needing more data than their plan allows, & importantly - want to receive & make calls in Japan at normal plan rate as if in Australia.
Not everyone needs unlimited data.
Most accommodation provides high speed WiFi. That's handy for downloads etc when resting after a hard days travel in Japan.that sounds amazing. Optus (who I'm with) only offer $10/day, with a piddling 10MB of data per day.
We stayed in youth hostels mainly, and I wouldn't describe their wifi as high speed (but excellent cheap accomodation in general)
@effgee:
Hope you enjoyed your time in Japan🏯I have only used free WiFi - never bought a SIM in Japan. But there were times it would have been handy last trip. Vodafone info was from research.
There are different categories of hostels: backpacker, Japan Youth Hostels, & a few Hostels International. Quality varies. The JYH mainly have young Japanese staying - quite an interesting experience & insight into the culture. They are handy in more remote areas, but fairly expensive for dorm rooms.
Backpacker hostels usually have better WiFi as Foreigners demand it. Very good speed where I stayed in Tokyo (own room with windows along 2 walls, light breakfast, double bed for 2700¥/n single if stay for a number of nights).
Hostel share rooms can cost the same as a room in Airbnb. I often stay in own basic room in old clean business hotels from $13/n in Osaka.
But prices are rising due to more travellers causing shortages in popular locations.
Moved up to Airbnb in May trip - effectively unlimited high speed in buildings. Prices were $30-50/n single, including at one great beach house.
Great times in Japan🎏
apart from first world country in Asia, always try to get local sim plan. way way way cheaper
I used wilh-Ma in April this year. Very convenient to receive in the mail and post it back rather than pick up and drop off at the airport.
I traveled in a group of 4 and went through 26GB in 11 days. Speeds were excellent in Tokyo and Kyoto. Totally worth it.
But definitely bring or hire a portable charger as the modem is unlikely to last the day otherwise.
actually pickup at the airport isn't bad. I also travelled in a group of 4, and I foolishely thought we'd get by on free wifi. After a couple of days it was abviously not working, so I ordered from japanwireless. They delivered it to my accomodation (tricky since we were moving accomodation most days) and I posted it back to them (in the prepaid envelope) on the way back to the airport.
100% agree on the portable charger comment. Gets thru the day easily, then plug everything into the Tronsmart 5-port charger each night (thanks again Ozbargain)
Thanks heaps, tipped my decision whether to go Wifi or Sim.
Not sure if these have been mentioned before,
https://www.softbank.jp/en/mobile/special/freewifi/en/
https://visitor.docomowifi.com/en/
http://flets.com/freewifi/index.html
Will be visiting JP this year and wondering if anyone has used any of the above services before?
yes, tried using https://www.softbank.jp/en/mobile/special/freewifi/en/ but (per my comment above) quickly realised we needed a sim. It's ok if you're stationary, but when you're on a train there is only signal at the stations. Plus it was a little flaky, always having to go thru login screens and enter passwords, and I was never sure how secure it was.
Yes, as soon as you've got free WiFi on the train, the train leaves the station ;-(
I used Japan Connected Free WiFi app on Android - just click app to find WiFi. Only sign up once - no repeated logins. Was ok. Handy near convenience stores.
Often used it to update routes on Google Maps, as no downloads were available for offline use. Did have offline map app as well.
I persevered with free WiFi, as I've travelled in Japan many times - before you could get WiFi anywhere except some accommodation. But easier as a single traveller used to hitchhiking in more remote areas of Japan.
