Load and Go - Making Sense of Pre-Authorisation Charges

I recently set up a Load & Go card via Australia Post. I was attempting to use it to register on an online service, and they required to charge 2 small amounts to the cards which I was to then provide to them as part of the verification process.

Unfortunately when the charges went onto the Load&Go card they don't seem to make sense. This is what appears in my statement:

Transaction Description Type Debit [-] Credit [+] Balance
30/06/2017 Pre-Auth Transaction-POS Signature Purchase International ,Transaction Fee $0.09 XXXXXXXXXXXXX Debit AUD $1.43 AUD $495.93
30/06/2017 Pre-Auth Transaction-POS Signature Purchase International ,Transaction Fee $0.09 XXXXXXXXXXXXX Debit AUD $1.55 AUD $497.36
30/06/2017 Activate And Load Card Credit AUD $500.00 AUD $500.00

On the home page of my Load&Go account it shows: Balance $497.02 AUD

For verification, I tried the displayed debit amounts, as well as the same amounts minus .09 each. Both failed, and I can't try again for 24 hours.

Anyone care to take a guess at making sense of this? I can't contact Load&Go support without paying fees for the privilege.

Are you sure the amounts were debited in AUD?

    • Yeah I am pretty sure on that. The amounts were meant to be for $1.xx and I provide the 'xx' part.

  • Try contacting Australia Post through livechat on facebook?

What's the online service you're trying to sign up too?

They may have charged your card in foreign currency and you need to provide the original pre AUD conversion amount. In any case the supplier wouldn't know about the card's transaction fees so I wouldn't try entering the amounts with the $0.09 added on.

Your balance of $497.02 is the original $500.00 minus the $1.43 and $1.55 but the individual transactions don't make sense unless there are other lines that still need to clear.

Thanks guys, tried again tonight and this time it accepted 34 & 46 (the figures minus .09 each); not sure why it didn't work last night. Also the extra dollar is apparently a known 'thing' that happens on occasion and is perfectly normal, and I guess it gets its' own .09 charge as well.
