Best E-ink Reader for PDFs

Hi ozbers,

I've been thinking for a while to buy a e ink reader mainly to read pdfs.

Currently I print them as I prefer to avoid screen on tablet and laptop at night.

Generally I read short articles 10-15 pages per pdf.

Mostly text with occasional pictures which I read in black and white when I print it.

I also sometimes download article as EPUB when supported to read on tablet.

I was thinking kindle but I know it is not compatible with EPUB so I would have to convert the files.

Anyone have experience with kindle and pdfs reading online the reviews to be mixed.

Thanks

  • Amazon Kindle DX is by far the best, but I think they have stopped making them. Still available used.

It has an iPad size screen so you can easily read A4 size docs. Smaller readers force you to pan around to read pdfs set to a large page size, or you need to have the text very small to fit the whole page at once.

All kindles read pdfs without converting.
Their ebook format is mobi or azw, but e-pub can be easily converted for free.
I just set calibre to automatically do it when I load stuff onto a kindle.

    • Yes, Kindle stop making the DX, I believe that didn't fit the portability needs of an Ebook reader. I wouldn't recommend any 6 inch readers for PDF though 300 DPI makes a lot easier than the older version.

      • Slightly better looking text makes it a lot easier? A lot easier doing what?

        • easier reading very small PDF font. No difference if you read mobi or epub. Said that, I wouldn't buy a 6 inches ebook just to read pdf.
There are some large screen E-ink reader that are still sold

  • I love my Kobo's. The Aura series is great. The Kobo Aura One specs: 7.8” E Ink touchscreen, 1872 x 1404 resolution, 300 dpi, though it has a price to match.

I've been using my Kobo Aura HD daily for years now. Can't recommend Kobo enough if all you want is an e-ink book reader. If you want something closer to a tablet go the Kindle, but I just use mine to read books.

  • I don't recommend reading PDF's on a e-reader smaller than 9 inches. The main problem you face is that you need to scroll sideways to read the document… unless you choose to zoom out, which makes the text small and hard to read. The text also does not reflow, so if document is a paper scan for e.g you're going to have a bad time.

I tried it on my Kindle KB (2015) before it and it worked terribly. This is an old kindle though so the resolution wasnt great however the screen size is basically the main thing you want to consider. I sold the kindle and bought a Android 1920 x 1200 high res tablet.

10.1 inches and above is ideal for PDF reading.

    • Good point about size. Have a 7inch tablet, and have to scroll left right which can get annoying.

Is there any e-ink devices at that size.

the only one i could find is Onxy ebook reader which is $500

  • I don't have any experience or knowledge, but if you have the money the Sony readers look very nice.

    • lol nice.
but i'm just a poor man

  • Maybe you could solve your issue another way

Instead of replacing the screen, get some blue blocking goggles.

I recommend uvex brand safety goggles, in yellow.
They will block all blue light and UV light. You actually won't be able to see the color blue, but for documents its fine.
