Xbox One S Vs Sony PS 4

Hi Guru's,
With this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/315860 (Xbox One S 500GB for around $250) I was thinking if this is good chance to start get into gaming world.

But I could not decide to choose between Xbox or PS4.

I need advice from experts to choose either of these two consoles.

I might not be a serious gamer. May be use mostly to use Netflix or play Blu-ray movies.

Please shed your thoughts.

Kindly
Sincere OzBargainer :)

Both consoles are really good, mate. Have a look at the exclusives and see which has more of the games you like. Both consoles play Bluray (but only the One S has 4K bluray). Personally I think Xbox is making much more consumer-focussed decisions over time, but really it's about the games you like :)

    • Thank you. If the decision should be made based on which game I like, I would go for Xbox, because as I said, never played any game before and do not have preference of games. So I will look at the price tag to make decision. So far price tag is more inclined towards Xbox being much cheaper.

I don't play enough to warrant paying for Live or PS plus. Annoying

PC doesn't have any of those fees!!

      • But you do need to buy a decent machine, semi regularly..

          Lets list some reasons why PC gaming isn't as expensive as you think;

PC gaming as a whole is much cheaper than console gaming. Especially in the long run, it can be less than half of what a console will cost you. Hidden fees, price hikes, and royalties are abundant for gamers AND developers in the console industry.

PC hardware offers better bang-for-buck & value than console hardware (same performance for less money, more performance for the same money, or much more performance for a bit more money).

PCs have the freedom to upgrade whenever YOU decide to, not when Sony or Microsoft decide to. If you just got a big paycheck and wanted to sell your R7 260 to a friend for $50 and buy an R9 380 for $150 tomorrow, you could do it.

PCs give you full internal and external control over the graphical fidelity triangle. Consoles can control neither.

PCs easily work with TVs and monitors, and even multiple of each.

PCs can play nearly every old PC and console game ever made, thanks to its tremendous legacy support, emulator availability, and GOG.

PCs can use nearly every console controller ever made, modern ones (PS3/PS4/X360/XO) work without even needing a USB adapter.

PC games offer a clearer image thanks to native resolution and its ability to adjust to any display its plugged into. Console games don't allow resolution adjustments, and will lock to whatever the developer arbitrarily chose. This means that lower resolution displays offer no performance benefit like they do on PCs, because the resolution is never lowered to spare some workload on the GPU (which, on a PC, would mean it could render frames faster).

Gaming services and "social services" on the PC are completely free, even with online play (Steam, Galaxy, Desura, Mumble, etc)

Gaming services on the PC offer more functionality than what you pay for on a console

PCs have better better multiplayer support (LAN, 16x local multiplayer on the same machine with softXpand)

Using a modern budget GPU yields around 60 frames per second during gameplay with recent game releases. Consoles can barely reach 30FPS most of the time.

Not only can PC's be used for education, entertainment, gaming, and content creation… they're the best at all of these things.

PCs are much more powerful than the PS4 or XBox One at the same (traditionally believe to be affordable!) price point

More exclusives than all the current-gen consoles combined

          More highly-rated exclusives

PC games have free modifications and enhancements available. Old games and new games alike have player-made content, graphical enhancements, and additions available for free. Even Minecraft.

          More games, much larger library

          More exclusive games

          Healthy independent developer scene

          Lots of free games

          Free abandonware titles

PCs can emulate almost any handheld and stationary console games using freely available emulators. Sometimes even at higher framerates, detail levels, and with better input than the original console permitted!

Increasingly cheaper hardware for the price as new GPUs are released

Big Picture mode for couch gaming

Easier to repair and highly modular

Backward and forward hardware compatibility of ~2 years

          No punishments for repairing

          Can be upgraded if desired

          Easier to upgrade

          Better price-performance than consoles

Higher framerates, resulting in smoother motion, physics, particles, and gameplay

Higher resolutions than consoles (such as 1080p, 1440p, 1600p, 4k, and 8k!) if your display supports it and you have GPU power you're willing to spare. Consoles struggle, even at 720-900p!

Higher graphical details (lighting, textures, foliage, particles, shading, weather)

You're probably going to own some sort of PC anyways, why not pay a bit more on top to make it a gaming machine? That alone makes it cheaper than a console.

        • @airal3rt:

I really hope that you copied and pasted that.. :)

I don't really play games but if I do then I would go with what my friends play (which is console).
I have a PC with 24GB RAM and an i5-750 2.67GHz together with GT630 (a work PC that was gifted to me for $35).
Theoretically I could upgrade things but then I have to boot the PC to play a game etc etc.. then end up on steam.

          TBC

        • @smashed:

It was indeed a copy paste haha, but it's useful to show people how good PC really is.

If you're deadset on playing with a particular circle of friends who flat out refuse to go with the superior PC option, that's fair enough. It's important for people to understand that PC is cheaper and better in just about every imaginable way however. The good news is, because online gaming doesn't cost a subscription fee, you can persuade your friends with a free trial at any time ;)

  • Can't go wrong with either. I personally have a PS4, due to my friends having PS4's… its a lot more fun playing with a group of mates. If this isn't a factor, I would go for the Xbox One S due to 4K, given you have/plan to buy a 4K TV.

  • PS4 cause exclusives alone makes it worth it.

Take a good look at exclusives for both consoles Sony has really been destroying XBox just from their exclusives alone, so many good games.

  • The main things to consider are the exclusives and what your friends are using. They are both good consoles, I own the Xbox One S and the PS4 Slim. If I could only choose one, I would lean more towards the Xbox. The Xbox One S will cost you less, and also has the added advantage of 4K Blu-ray support.

    The answer is PC

Sorry just to add, Xbox Backwards Compatibility might be a system seller for you too? Again, look at the games catalogue and see what you like.

  • How do they compare as a media player to stream media from a USB HDD and WiFi apps such as Youtube and Daily Motion??

  • Agree with all the comments here. They are both good systems, xbox is generally cheaper because they've sold less units than the PS4 and they're trying to catchup at the moment. PS4 has a lot of games that are only on their system - hence why they're the most popular system at the moment.

    I'd recommend a PS4 for that reason.

  • PS4 all the way.

  • Check what your mates are using as you would want to play multiplayer. You cannot cross platform multiplayer YET.
You wont go wrong with either….

If you do not want to multiplayer

-I would suggest Xbox One S—> It plays 4k blurays (with HDR) which neither PS4 nor PS4 pro does. Again given you are using 4k tv, else this parameter does not hold.

-And yes, Xbox One S controller needs less frequent charging compared to PS4 controller (which is quite annoying once you start gaming)

If above does not matter…Buy the one with cheapest deal. (both have exclusive games, you would either ways miss on one if you buy either of them…both offer good games)
