Delayed Baggage Compensation from AmEx, Airline or Both?

Hi ozbarganistas,

Me and my gf are on our 1st trip paid with AmEx Explorer.

Long story short - our baggage got delayed for 2 days. We bought some clothes and toiletries during this time. Unfortunately we didnt know how it all works and were pretty modest with our shopping. Later we found out Chubb would reimburse $500.
As an ozbarganista i would like to get the maximum out of it. So the question is should we claim from amex/chubb, airline or both? Is it worth the trouble trying to claim from them all? Or will the total claimable amount be the same anyway, because
Chubb wants to know if i have already claimed from airline?

Cheers,
Mart

  • When you claim from Amex/Chubb, there will be a section that will ask you if you are also claiming from another third party. Obviously, you want to be as truthful as possible. You can try to claim both sides but you will never know what happens if you were caught lying on the claim form, maybe a rejection of claim at most or a black mark on your insurance/credit profile? Who knows.

In the T/C, the insurance provider will either not pay you if have already claimed from a third party, or pay the difference of what you can claim from them and what you have received from the third party, as such the question on the claim form. I would see who can give me the higher amount and claim from that party.

But then, whats the point of travel insurance if it doesnt give me any extra cover?
I paid ca $100+ extra in Amex surcharges just to be covered

To actually give you some cover for a range of things which you would otherwise foot the bill for? Eg. hospital bills, flight cancellations/changes, etc, etc.

You actually think it is there so you can double-dip on things which happen to be covered by someone else?

Some airlines won't give compensation for lost luggage. Or they'll give very little. Maybe $50 for low cost airlines. It's also for medical, flight cancellations, if someone in your family gets sick and you can't go.

      You can't double dip.
