eBay/Android Headunit Owners in Sydney

Hey guys wondering if anyone here has an android headunit they got off ebay or the likes. Something like joying or xtron. Reason is i'm looking to buy one and i wanted to test if they support plugging a USB dac into output the audio. So would just need 5 seconds to plug in the usb dac and see if sound gets outputted to my headphones to test it.
Will pay $20 for the time.

Cheers

  • Why are you buying a headunit to listen through headphones?
Why not just plug headphones (or the DAC) into your phone?

    • Only using the headphones to test that it works, i'm going to be outputting from my dac via optical a digital signal to my car's DSP.

  • Don't bother
those cheap "android" headunits are turd at the best of times, cheap crap components, good luck interfacing a DAC let alone making the thing work properly
I highly doubt plugging a USB DAC into it is going to work

Nope, it definitely works, but only certain brands will.

      • It's just a software (and CPU power) issue.

      • Looking on xda at the moment and it's hard to find discussion on newer models. Any idea what brands work?

        • No idea, but newer Joying looks alright.

    • Agreed!

I purchased one a few years ago from Aliexpress. Don't know if the quality has improved since then (was on Android ICS) but the software was somewhat clunky and took too long to start up.

The worst thing was after 6 months on a hot day, the touchscreen stopped working. To have it repaired under warranty meant sending it back to China at a cost of over $100, and not even knowing if the seller was reliable and would honour the warranty. I decided against potentially throwing good money after bad.

Luckily I was able to replace the touchscreen myself with components found on the net, but I wouldn't buy one again unless from a manufacturer with a good track record

That's the bootup time of the new ones. They have octacore ones which looking at videos are buttery smooth. And yeah that is definitely a concern seeing if they're built to withstand being turned on after sitting in the sun on a 43 degrees day.

        • Cold boot isn't a big deal these days because most have sleep functions up to 24hrs. They hold a bit of charge enough to wake up as soon as car ignition goes again.

        • Does that use much battery? Yeah that seemed a bit too fast for a cold boot. But generally it looks really snappy.
