TPG is switching me over from ADSL2+ to their FTTB.
I'm getting new modem from them which I assume will be pretty average so what are better alternatives?
The main selling points for me is internet speed and WIFI strength.

This is good advice. Use the provided modem for modem purposes, and purchase a ROUTER specifically for faster WiFi if the provided one isn't good enough.
Edit: Sounds like the provided one is fine for max WiFi speeds.
I just have the original setup TPG FTTB Huawei HG659. It works awesome. Download & upload speeds are stable at 94 Mb/s& 38 Mb/s using 5GHz band even at peak hours. A drastic improvement from my original NBN setup with throttled speed.
thanks all I'll their modem a shot and see
I've just got FTTB through TPG and use their provided modem (in bridge mode) along with a Xiaomi Mi Router 3 (http://www.gearbest.com/wireless-routers/pp_346394.html) as the wireless router - my setup works perfectly.
If you're not using it for high-speed gaming, then the TPG supplied modem/router (Huawei HG659) is more than enough. It's got both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz bands.
