Xiaomi Yeelight - Can I Control It outside from Home?

Hi,
I have been searching some information on this and have had some conflicting results.
Basically, can I use my mobile data (3G) when I am at work, and then turn the Yeelights on/off? or must I be at home connected to the WiFi in order to control the Yeelights?

Thank you in advance!

  • You can control it anywhere as long as:-

    1. The Yeelights are connected to your home's WiFi.

    2. You have internet connection with your phone.

Just to point out that the light switch at your home must be constantly turned on to make sure that there's power being supplied to the Yeelights.

You can then control the on and off of the lights with the app in your phone.

Even when the lights are off, there'll still be a very low power being consumed as the Yeelights will be connected to WiFi 24x7x365 and they will be ready to accept commands from your phone wherever you are.

    • I have the Yeelights in my current and new (havent moved in yet) house, but I can only connect to it when I am in bluetooth/ same wifi range?

      • Just realized that there's a more basic Bluetooth only model.

Do you have the WiFi or Bluetooth model?

        • i…didnt realise either lol. Using the bedside lamp ones so far and yup both are offline. Must be bluetooth range only :[

  • Use the Yeelight app as opposed to the Xiaomi app. Yeelight app IMO has better user experience and is simple to use.

    • Can you use both of them at the same time? Or have your Xiaomi Gateway controlling them through home automation as well as using the Yeelight app?

You can if you have a gateway connected for controlling the lights
Otherwise you can only perform tasks internally on your home network
I think it would be wise though if you're going to connect your lights to the "internet" that you use appropiate caution in regards to what you allow a potential hacker to do, there was talk about internet connected devices being able to be hacked on old firmware, allowing someone to "spoof" the mac address of the device and then gain "access" to your network, not a good situation

The only way it would work is

Lights ……>Lights Gateway controller >>>> router >>>> internet >>> your device with app being able to two way communicate with the Light gateway outside of your network

It is possible, absolutely but be cautioned in regards to the above points I raised, ensure firmware is updated, ensure you lock down your network or run a seperate wireless network for your lights etc

    • 1000% on board with this one.
I'm using HomeAssistant which is an open-source 'gateway' build with Python to control smart devices.
They have a large catalogue of existing devices which require a couple of lines to implement, and use it to control my Yeelights, PS4, Samsung TV, and array of sensors!

I'm not a fan of having the Yeelight app constantly on when all I want to do is toggle it on and off, so this is a great alternative.

  • I'm hoping for a unified method one day. Just say to google on your phone (when you're away from home), and it 'talks' to your Google home, and relays commands to different brands at your home.

For no afaik this only partially happens - google home talks to multiple devices. But there's no way to do that from outside the house, instead using multiple apps for multiple devices.

    • I'm not sure I entirely understood what you mean, but you can 'unify' it through IFTTT.
They have the tie in to Google Assistant and Yeelight, meaning you can currently use voice controls to turn on, turn off, toggle, apply variable brightness, variable colour, and variable temperature.

      • Basically I want the ability to control your Google home remotely (via your phone). Not that I have 1 currently so this may be an option lol

Once you get different brands of devices in your house, the only way to unify them is by Google home or Amazon alexa. I'm hoping there's some way to give these devices commands remotely.

Otherwise you have multiple apps on your phone for multiple brands/devices, which is a bit shit lol

You can use Google Assistant on your phone which works with IFTTT. It's basically a Google Home in your phone.

Google Assistant is currently available for phones with Android 6.0 and above (select US English for your language) and iOS (US App Store).

Google Home isn't a server or a bridge. It's a client to your Google account and services.
Your phone is as much an extension of your device network as the Google Home is.

        • I can do all this via the HomeKit Application by Apple
My Apple TV 4 does all the remote gateway interfacing, I can control lights, set schedules and make my home perform tasks as required
certainly not cheap but its unified enough for me
