    @OP
    For people on short cable distances under 2 kilo's, I recommend the ASUS DSL-AC68U ($284) can get it for $241.40 and you can redeem two cashbacks, 1.3 percent ($3.63) from CR and $20 from ASUS, bringing total down to $217.77 once all your cashback is cleared.

    Pete Y testing from Whirlpool says:

    the dsl-ac68u has a mediatek chipset and works best on short lines under 2.5km from exchange , the d7000 is a broadcom chipset and works best on long lines over 2.5km

    but

    asus firmware is far better

    and is why if you are on a long line you get
    separate cheap $40 broadcom modem tp link td w8960N and bridge it and run an asus rt-ac68u as the wireless router

    • Thanks for the advice. Forgive my ignorance, who is Pete Y testing.

      For people on short cable distances under 2 kilo's, I recommend the ASUS DSL-AC68U

      I am 1.5km in cable length from the exchange. I had a ASUS DSL-AC68U until it got fried in a storm, and replaced it with a D7000. The Asus firmware is a million times better, far more options. It is also more temperamental. Without any tweaking, I get 1.8 MB/s on the D7000 compared to 1.6 MB/s on the Asus tweaked to the max.

      So it's a bit mixed. I miss the Asus GUI and options, but get a higher speed and less need to screw around with the Netgear.

      WiFi is better (stronger over distance) on the Asus.

      • definitely, i prefer broadcom over mediatek chipsets for adsl

  • asus DDWRT/Merlin firmware is far better. ;)

    If you want to compare apples to apples, the R7000 and RT-AC88U are both great options for bridging.

  • i will need to buy one, when i switch to nbn about 4 months later. not sure if i should buy it now. i am on fttn
