  • Nice price for a good stand mixer, shame about the plastic mixing bowl though.

    • Plastic does not dent if you drop it

Yes, but it discolours and the top layer comes off when scraped (or after repeated wash in a dishwasher), leaving a rough, semi-porous and unhygienic surface. Stainless steel ones look good also.

I do not think that the plastic will have issues with a dishwasher. Everything (nearly everything) is "dishwasher safe" now. This is the type of thing that manufacturers would expect to go in the dishwasher.

A scratch is only "unhygienic" if you dont know how to clean properly.
Metal too can scratch and small dents can occur resulting in the same "unhygienic" surface

@anthony: Most manufacturers that supplied good instructions are careful in pointing out that 'dishwasher safe' plastic containers should be washed on the top rack only (where the conditions are significantly less harsh) but one cannot fit a mixing bowl on the top rack.

IMHO, the ideal material for a mixing bowl is either porcelain or glass (if you don't take weight into consideration) but stainless steel is a better compromise to plastic which is difficult to clean (as oil tends to cling on to plastic surfaces, requiring more detergent and scrubbing to shift).

That is only if your dishwasher has an open heating element.
If your dishwasher is remotely new it will have a concealed element so where you put plastic items does not matter.

Really? I have no issues putting things much larger than a mixing bowl on my top rack

@anthony: Guess I must be one of the countless less fortunate souls who is still using a not 'remotely new' dishwasher then.

Hence, I'm disadvantaged in having to purchase a more expensive stand-mixer that comes with a stainless steel bowl, whereas the more fortunate owners of a remotely new dishwasher could take advantage of cheaper stand-mixers that come with a plastic bowl.

And they say that manufacturers of good brands know what their customers desire in a product and priced them accordingly.

Sorry, dont take what I said personally.
My dishwasher is not close to being new by any measure but it still has a closed element. I dont remember seeing an open element in a new time!

The issue with the open element is during the drying cycle as it gets rather warm.
If you can remember to take plastic out of the bottom shelf when it goes into the drying cycle plastic will be fine.

  • How weird, so it was only the NSW Clive Peeters stores that closed down?
