Building a Gaming Desktop for The Price of a Dell XPS

Hey all

I've offered to price a gaming build for a friend who is about to pull the trigger on a Dell XPS desktop. I'm a quite experienced tech but haven't priced parts recently or had a look at what's best bang for your buck. The XPS is about $1700 and his ceiling is $2000, excluding monitors/peripherals.

XPS specs:

  • i7 7th gen processor
  • 16Gb RAM (dual channel DDR4 2400Mhz - 8Gb x 2)
  • Nvidia GTX 1070 with 8Gb GDDR5 graphics memory, 1 x dual-link DVI-D, 3 x Display, 1 x HMDI
  • 256Gb M.2 SSD
  • 2Tb 7200rpm HDD
  • Optical disc drive (RW - DVD/CD)
  • 4 x 3.0 USB ports
  • 1 x 3.1 USB port
  • 2 x USB 2.0 ports
  • 1 x USB 3.1 type C port
  • 1 x HDMI
  • 1 x Display port
  • 1 x Gbit ethernet port
  • 1 audio port (5.1 channel, 3 jack)

Anyone built or priced a gaming desktop recently for the $1700-$2000 range? Purely for gaming, running two large monitors

Thanks in advance!

  • Go here for an idea of what works well. http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_conf…. Then depending on where you live use somewhere like msy or other pc parts chain stores for a more accurate price.

    • Yeah I've always used that page as a guide but it's currently quite out of date

  • Umm what is your question exactly?

    • Has anyone built or priced a gaming desktop recently for the $1700-$2000 range? If so what were your specs?

Go to PCPartPicker and filter by price. This will give you an indication of what you can get for your budget.

        • Excellent site.

  • That price isn't too bad for a built system, but if you want you can build one better yourself with these 20% off sales
-CPU-I57600K $278 (better for gaming and can OC)
-RAM $135 (all from same ebay shop)
    -GPU-$1070 ~$500
    -MB-$105 MSI S1151
    -HD-$78 2tb WD Blue
    -SSD-$127 250GB intel m2
-Case- $60 heaps to choose from
    -PSU- ~$80

    Total $1363
$20 for win key or $100 for legit
cheapy mouse+keyboard and dvd burner $20 total ~$1400
Use that ~300 on steam gift cards for the summer sale starting tomorrow.

      WiFi and Bluetooth?

Also these "cheapy mouse+keyboard and dvd burner" would cost more than $20

Why would you bother with WIFI for a gaming PC?

Totally agree with that CPU, was going to suggest the same.

-CPU-I57600K $278 (better for gaming and can OC)

      Better value. Not outright better.

      • Considering the OP has a budget I'd say he's better with that i5 and spend more on GPU and mobo.
