I was after some 1m USB Type-C cables after a recent phone upgrade and managed to negotiate $8 off the 2 pack of Tronsmart USB A to USB C cables.

The 1.8m cables in this deal were too long for what I needed plus I noticed a few people also wanted the shorter cables.

The braided version isn't officially Benson-approved as yet (AFAIK) though he's given the tick of approval on other Tronsmart USB Type-C cables and it does feature the required 56k resistor.

  • Does length affect charging capabilities? I once bought like a 5m cable and overnight only charged 30%, since then have always steered away from 1m+ :(

Length is one thing that can affect charging speed, but it depends on the gauge of the wire. A longer cable with thicker wire (lower AWG) may carry current better than a shorter cable made of thinner (higher AWG) wire.

But yes, a long cable that is cheaply made with thinner wire can struggle to charge at full speed. Thicker cables will do better for long distances.

You hit the nail on the head, 100% right.

Can't say I've ever even seen a 5M charge cable but it'd want to be a heavy duty thick copper wire. Over 5m we're talking a pretty serious cable to make up for that length. Chances are the AWG needed would be extremely hard to find. I had a 3m one once (cheapy from eBay) which could only manage about 10% over 12 hours of charge time. Now most of my cables are 1M and high quality, sometimes 2M.

Quality costs money. This is especially important for USB Type-C. The cables should be "benson approved" to avoid potential damage to your phones. I think Tronsmart should be okay (I have older MicroUSB Tronsmart which have been great) but haven't checked their Type-C's. I get Blitzwolf too and they've been great so far.

The only reason I'm not upvoting this deal is the price seems a little on the high side, if their cables are comparable to Blitzwolf I paid a few bucks less for 2 of those not long ago.

        • woops sorry maybe 3m, just realised my room isnt that long haha

        • @kza2610:

All good. Yeah I had a cheap 3m cable from ebay once, I ended up using it as a tie rope for something. Did a much better job there than it ever did at charging phones.

  • is there a deal on just C-C cables instead of A-C?

    • +1

I can't wait until the world goes in that direction. Dump A completely and let's just have C-C. I'm tempted to hold out on my powerbank purchase until I can get C-C, and planning to get that in my wall charger and car chargers. They're out there but still quite rare :/

      • My PC and my laptop both have it as well as my phone I'm ready!

        • Oh cool I'm behind the times then, didn't realise laptops already had them. Makes lots of sense in a world of miniaturisation.

I hope they're better quality then their Lightning cables. I purchased 2 tronsmart ones, only one worked out of the box and that stopped charging after a few weeks.

  • Thanks, got one, for a future phone…

  • Just purchased two lots. Thanks OP!
