I picked up one of these second hand a while back. Unfortunately they're terrible for gaming because the LCD screen has really high response times and motion turns into a blurry mess with after images.

    • did you get the same model or was it a older model, i have seen some good reviews on them.

  • Just get a cheap 17" 1080p Alienware second hand of Gumtree or Cash Converters for $800 - $1000 as they have a 2 way HDMI (External and Internal) so you can use it as a Monitor. The older M17R4 has 2 x HDMI dedicated in/out and the newer has 1 x HDMI (2 way)
All you do is plug in your HDMI source and use it as a monitor.

Furthermore, the LED screen is designed for high fps so you wont cop any lag.

That way, if you decide down the track that you don't wish to have an external portable monitor or not using it anymore, you can sell it for a decent price as it is a full laptop.

    Cheers

    • need something more portable

But did not know that alienware laptops can be used as a monitor for other devices, good to know.

      • Yes. I use it as a TV, with an external TV/Tuner set top box connected to it via HDMI. It works well and has decent volume (which many monitors lack)

        • what about the newer alienware laptops, can i use it as a monitor for other devices ?

        • @Emrah: Yes. I think you can. You need to check to be sure (disclaimer) however saying this confidently, I have both the older ~ 2012 M17XR4 and newer models ~ 2014 17R2 (17") and both work flawlessly. Not sure about the smaller units. However, obviously the newer units are not priced to the cheaper external monitor that you are interested in.
