Help, new to alcohol, recommend an OK cheap beer for a FRUGAL Ozbargainer.

Hi fellow Ozbargainer's :).

I'm young and new to booz, sometimes when I get home and turn the telly on I'd like to have a cold one, (Edit: wish I had a cold one, not a hot one a cold one ;-).
I'm saving for retirement and I'm frugal, so I want something cheap budget is $30, it must also be in glass bottles as I want to brew my own once I accumulate enough bottles.

TLDR:
Recommend an OK beer for a frugal person,
budget is $30,
must be in glass bottles as I'll be brewing my own,
I win Savas, you stopped :).

PS I live in Adelaide.

  • $30 per bottle? six-pack? or slab?

Not just glass bottles, crown seals. I had bad yield rates with twist top bottles.

I used to have Hollandia in my younger days. It was cheap and not too offensive.

    • +1

      Thanks.
Would you know if all Hollandia beers use crown seals?

      • +1

Yeah, I think they do. You could just go to Dan's and check it and generally for cheap beer while looking at the bottle neck.

You can occasionally get Sol cheaply too. They are crown seals, but you have to live with the label as they use some nasty glue. Don't forget you can occasionally get cheap 6-packs with a coles / woolies receipt.. It works out a bit more than $30 for a case, but it's normally better beer.

    Sainte Etienne Imported Premium Lager 24 x 330mL $29.99

    Aldi 'tribute' to Stella Atoris.

Melbourne’s bargain beer buyers rate Aldi knock offs

    • +1

Sainte Etienne is a fully imported, full flavoured premium lager at a stellar price.

      They're not subtle.

    • +1

      Thanks :)

If you want bottles, just go round housing estate areas on bin night. Guaranteed to get hundreds :)

    • +1

Better to go round the hipster areas to get the crown seal bottles. Twist tops don't re-seal well for home brew.

      • +3

False! Hipsters don't drink beer unless it costs $20 a glass and is served in a wanky bar with inefficient lighting

        • +3

Guess we'll have to settle this by visiting a number of ill-lit establishments selling premium beers. You can get the first round in ;-)

        • +2

          @mskeggs: don't forget to post pics :)

        • +4

@Wystri Warrick: Probably can't see the pics due to inefficient lighting :(

@silverrat23: Turing on the flash helps.
Are you using a Xiaomi, in indoor/low lite rooms photos can turn out grainy but with the flash turned on you will still be able to capture the subject.

If you need any help you can pm me :).

        • +1

@Wystri Warrick: Nope, I've got an Sony Xperia Z (like, the very first one - not the Z3 or whatever). Still takes photos fine, but I wouldn't want to dazzle other patrons with the flash.

        • +1

@silverrat23: I'm sure other patrons would love to be dazzled by you ;).

You can start home brewing with literally nothing.
A dozen softdrink PET bottles are fine (keep them out of sunlight so the beer isn't light struck).
You can brew a $9 home brand tin with half the water to make 12l of extra malt beer. Makes a very nice brew because you are getting the extra malt instead of watery macro lager.

Home brew is so easy and cheap to get good results, and very forgiving. Just keep everything clean, be patient with maturing a bottled brew for a few weeks, and you won't go wrong.

For any other home brewers out there, google toucan home brew to see discussions on how to adapt canned brew for full malt brewing, but really it comes down to just dumping two cans into the barrel and skipping the other sugars to make a full bodied brew. I did 1.5 cans per 25l barrel and half a cup of maltodextrin with reliable results. Usually added extra hops too.

Congratulations Wystri Warrick on winning! lol

And as the winner my first enactment will be to make you second place, and as the elected winner I promise to serve all stalkers on Ozbargain :P lol.

Aldi Storm range. Recently won an award at the Australian International Beer Awards. Maybe it is over $30,but is well worth it.

    • +1

Hmm this Aldi beer is looking promising :)

    • +2

    • +1

I find it a little to diluted, thanks for three suggestion though :).

      • +1

        • +1

Don't want to end up with diabetes, and don't want high blood pressure.
Thanks though for the suggestions keep them coming, I feel we're getting somewhere with this brain storming.
          Cheers :).

Advice from someone who has been doing home brew for around 12 years now - up to batch number 77. I have tried all the different bottle types over the years and I now only use the Coopers long neck bottles. Small bottles (350/375ml) are too much hassle for cleaning. Trust me, you'll spend a lot of time rinsing bottles. The bottling process takes longer too as you're capping twice as many bottles.

The only exception for me nowadays is the Grolsch style bottles, I have a few of those to use as my test bottles.

For a while I really liked the Little Creatures Pale Ale 568ml bottles, I find they are an excellent drinking size, however they are in between one and two sugar priming drops so you have to measure your own priming sugar. I go for convenience nowadays so I stick with the sugar drops and the long necks.

The Coopers long neck bottles are almost indestructible too, thicker glass than other bottles.

      Thanks for the tip :).
I have to say I never thought about bottle size, I could save a little over time from having to use less caps.
      Cheers :).

  • I've never really developed a taste for any particular beer. So when I go into a bottle shop, I just buy the cheapest. Most of the time it ends up being a nice Euro beer without any big following - so it's cheap. Really cheap compared to the Australian made beers

I also don't drink much beer in the winter. To me it's a summer drink. When it's 34F and 110% humidity and I've been pumpin' at the gym, or lumpin' stuff around or just humpin' and have a well earned thirst, it doesn't matter what's on the lable on the bottle, just as long as I can see the word BEER, I'm happy. And down it goes.

    • What about stouts for winter?

  • Been brewing a long time now.Now use a keg system.
For a first timer, it's hard to beat the convenience of plastic soft drink bottles. I used to use the green ones i.e mountain dew.The screw on lids are re-usable and if you don't finish the bottle , just re-seal it and put it back in the frig.
Also, I can tell you from first hand experience that plastic bottles are stronger than glass i.e less likely to explode if you make an error.
