Replace or Relaminate Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Hi,

The laminate on our kitchen cabinet doors and drawers are all coming apart. The kitchen itself and everything else is in good condition. We have no issues with the layout, so don't want to do any kitchen renovation.

I've been told that just getting new doors would be cheaper than trying to relaminate it. I am handy enough to take out all the doors, add hinges to new doors and put them back in - so no tradies required. I haven't measured the doors, so don't know if they are standard size or not. I know they are not Ikea sizes. :)

Can someone recommend the best place in Melbourne to get new doors and drawer fronts? I have thought about Bunnings, but wondering if there are other places that are cheaper and better quality.

Edit:
Have measured the doors. They are
- 2 of 30cm x 67.5cm
- 2 of 34cm x 72 cm
- 2 of 46cm x 72 cm
These don't look like standard sizes. :(

  • I don't think you will get many places cheaper than Bunnings.

  • I'm in Brisbane and sorry cant recommend anyone in Melbourne. But been thru the same process as you and as it turns out, because our doors are not standard-size, we couldnt get good price on readymade. We ended up with someone who was happy enough t o just make the doors for us. It is not really cheap but cheaper than replacing the whole kitchen. And it is good quality we know.

    • Hey, I just came across this reply whilst running a search - care to share the contact and approx price when you did it? I'm looking at doing the same with my kitchen doors/drawers and based in Toowong :).

      • I tried to PM you but unlike others, you dont have that function..

        • Turns out I had it disabled for some reason. All good now!

        • @ifcw:
Lost my PM, just sent again..

  • +1

Is it laminate coming off or melamine edge strip, or vinyl wrap?
Laminate doors have square edges and black lines,
I'd go to joinery supplies shop if your confident in your skills.

    Or laminex Australia http://www.laminex.com.au/

I'd take a door with you as a sample when ordering
you would need a thickness too as this can be a factor
Also this trade uses millimeters, not cm's biggest number first
    I.e. 2/ 675 x 300 x 18mm

  • I found guys on ebay selling cut and laminated chipboard to custom sizes for cheap.
I used them for a built in wardrobe, but I expect they could knock out kitchen cupboards too.
That said, a new kitchen is largely about the labour, and if you are installing yourself under OK benchtops, why not go the IKEA or Bunnings route and get some current trend doors/drawers?

    • I am handy enough to replace doors as all that takes is a couple of screws on the hinges. I don't want to attempt a full kitchen reno replacing all the cabinet boards. Our door sizes are not standard, so I can't just go to IKEA/Bunnings and buy new doors as they won't fit.

  • In Melbourne try Armstrong's Cabinets (they are in Cheltenham). Take your old doors in and they can replace exact size with either vinyl wrap or 2 pack painted. It will be marginally more expensive than Bunnings but 5x the quality and for me it was a clip out, clip in 1 minute exercise per door to replace them. I picked doors from the Polytec range.

    • Thank you. I've sent them an email asking for more information before I head all the way out to Cheltenham.

      • Alternatively, you can attempt to use heat gun and remove the laminate surface, sand down any glue, prime and paint it to the colour of your choice.

        • I suggested Painting to the boss; but she didn't like that idea. :)

  • Replace, go to a cabinet maker type place with the doors and ask for copies, then they will make exact sizes, you may want new hardware too though.
Bunnings Ikea etc won't have the exact size.
