Do printers usually come with usb cables?

I just bought the first laser printer in my life, Samsung ML-1660 for $69 at Landmark. I was surprised when I couldn't find an usb cable inside the box.

  • I have a Fuji Xerox Phaser 3124, so like cheapest laser printer you can get, that came with a USB cable, plus aussie/european/asian plugs, lol

  • My Canon Pixma MP140 didn't come with one, but you can just get a generic one for less than $5.

  • +3

Depends on which brand… some brands don't carry cables anymore afaik, canon , samsung and hp.

depends on how you look at it, some printers don't come with all the extras due to 'cost cutting'…

no big deal though… if you have your old inkjet printer usb cable, you can reuse them.

    • this +1

I found that out old webcam had the same plug, so i just reused that

  • my samsung ml-1640 didn't come with usb cable

  • I bought a HP 6500. It came with a usb and cat5 cable.

Although I have previously seen staff advising customers in officeworks that certain printers they bought did not have a usb cable.

If you don't have a usb cable and need one just ask around. I may have a spare usb cable too, just need to dig around in my pile of cables.

  • USB cables are cheap. A 2m one is only $2 at MSY, but it takes me one hour to go there and come back, just for a $2 cable. That's quite annoying.

  • Used to work @ Officeworks, and the majority of printers didn't come with cables…was pretty standard to ask people if they needed to buy a cable with their printer or if they had an old one they could use from their old printer. Very few printers actually came with cables (much to most people's surprise)

  • and then you dont know if its the right type of usb cable with the square shaped plug (if only i didnt throw my old webcam out, id of had a cable laying around like davo

    • it's often written on the box.. usb-a usb-b not all old webcams have the usb-b plugs either. some don't even let you detach the cables. ;)

edit: just to add, in the 'olden' days of parallel cables, the printers don't come shipped with the cables nor the serial cables for 300bps dial-up modem either… so i really don't see the fuss. just take extra 5 minutes to read the words on the box will save you couple of hours or days hunting for a 'missing' cable.

  • A lot of the newer printers do not have USB cables included. There is a sticker on the side of most of them that say "Green Friendly" which is them saying "We saved $0.10 per unit so we could get $100,000 more."
