NiMH Battery, Kodak LSD $11 for 4, Tuna, Milo and Other Goodies, Too Many to Explain in Title

180

I've just been grocery/bargain shopping and here are a few items i found notably cheap from three places:

Woolies - pack of 4 low self discharge NiMH 2100mAH batteries, was $22 now $11

  • redheads firestarter match, was $5 now $2 (http://www.redheads.com.au/lighters.php useful for summer barbies)
  • home brand sandwich tuna 185g (in oil, water etc) 89c! for comparison…. 95g random brand, even when on special, is $1 or more. .
i think its a recent pricing readjustment as the homebrand 95g sandwich tuna is also 89c. and for your information, it tastes just as good as in my opinion as john west and alike.

Big W - Systema range 50% off. i missed the coles one but this is ok

Franklins - 1.25kg milo $8
- 2L oak flavoured milk $2.60

btw that photo came off the first ipod to be able to take stills =). reasonable given the sensor is 1/6.3" and 3mm thick

gee acid is cheap these days… hehe

    • Dang, you beat me to it! :D

  • These Kodak cells are LSD cells. Nearly as good as Sanyo eneloop but sold at $5-$10 cheaper than eneloop cells.

    • interesting. what's it not as good at? and how is it normally 5-10$ less than eneloop? i thought the latter was $24 or so for 4, where as this is normally $22 for 4

Ryda is selling eneloop at around 20$ now but the price was around 16$. Ebay/DealExtreme may offer cheaper prices.

have a look at the thread below, which contains intensive comparison between these two.

I'll probably get one pack of these Kodak batteries for my Wii remotes. What I need is a charger :) I know they are pre-charged, but don't know how long it can last.

        • ah yes thanks.

eneloops are better for voltage sensitive devices. otherwise equal in practice, according to the author.

          • @kimmik: Do you think Wii controllers are "voltage sensitive devices"? lol

        • I thought eneloop from dx are clones ? anyways, ty for posting this, bought 2 pack for me xbox controllers XD

          • +1

@mikkim4eva: Yes, there have been reports of DX selling counterfeit Eneloops in the past, though I'm not sure whether this is still the case. Although I've bought plenty of things from DX before, the bad thing about them is that the suppliers from which they source certain products can occasionally change, and so it can be hard to know what to expect at times.

  • Someone finally found a use for the camera on one of those nanos?

    • its the touch halleluja

  • Decent price for branded rechargables.

If people are looking for rechargables, give the aldi ones a try. "Ultracell rechargable 2500mAh"

They are just under $10 as an everyday price (for 4). I got a pack a while back and they seemed fine.

    • +2

The Ultracell 2500mAh aren't low self-discharge though and so are not exactly equivalent for comparison purposes.

On the other hand, Aldi do have Ultracell 2000mAh Ready To Use AA batteries which are LSD. Picked up two 2xAA packs last week for $5 each. :)

I knew these were not LSD, just thought i would let people know their normal NiMH 2500's are a pretty good deal. Even when you compare to DX or ebay.

I had seen the 2pack precharged, just totally forgot they were there. :)

Any idea which is the better way to go for a cordless mouse? Higher rating vs lower rating but LSD?

        • +1

Given that most cordless mice are low current devices and are pretty efficient these days (ie will last at least a few months on a charge), I would go with LSD as standard NiMH can suffer as high as 30% self discharge in a month (if I remember correctly).

If you do the calculations, 30% self-discharge reduces the remaining capacity of your standard 2500mAh NiMH to 1750mAh (ie 70% total capacity) after only a month. Compare this to LSD NiMH which are rated to maintain 80-85% charge retention after one year.

My personal rule of thumb is that if a device is a high current drain and you expect to use it regularly after charging (ie camera flashes, digital cameras, LED flashlights) then use standard NiMH as they have a higher overall capacity coming off the charger.

For low current draw devices or those which you don't intend to use straight away after charging, LSD generally tends to be the better choice as they retain their charge for longer.

          • @GreenGuava: The new Eneloops hold 70-75% after 3 years. These are cheap, but I won't let go of my eneloop with 1500 cycles. For the price, anyone after LSD batteries… This is a good deal.

  • I bought some at Prospect SA store. I'm testing them to check capacity, made in China? Does this affect quality?

    • did you finish testing? how is it?

      • If billiards1963 is doing a proper break-in cycle, it will take 39+ hours so it might be a while yet :)

  • got myself 2 packs of Kodak LSD 4xAA. Good price for local name brand LSDs. I have other (enetime) LSDs from DX made in china and they work well (without extensive testing done).
    Good find!

  • +1

    still testing, result tomorrow!

  • +2

Ok, all finished testing. 2,028 maH capacity of the 1st one. Pretty good as they normally take a few charge/discharge cycles to get to maximum performance :-)
