  • Still listed "out of stock online". I wonder if there are many units in store

Also same price at Woolworths this week, Vodafone shops/online and $10 more from Harvey Norman ( might be able to price match ). Good cheap phone easy to get unlocked and will work 100% on all 3 Telcos 3G/4G networks.

you can get this deal from vodafone directly right now

    • Starter kit included?

      • +1

        yes.

  • it is also 50 dollars to unlock.

Be Aware, very poor and well documented battery issue, google it. Otherwise a reasonable phone. (imho)

  • There is a known battery issue, but this has been 'normalised' with the new Nougat 7.0 update which was rolling out last week.
I got this a few months ago for $169 from Target, and it was free to unlock online via their online unlocking tool (unlock.vodafone.com). Just select 'purchased from Vodafone' during the prompts and the code will appear for free.
This is a good budget branded phone, and the battery life is now much improved, and is acceptable on Nougat (a full normal working day with calls and some social media and web browsing).

    • Sony fails yet again.
Sony has removed the firmware update from OTA.
XDA advised: "Some big problems with this update, because removing updated is really big step from Sony Mobile."

Seriously considering paying a few $ more for Motorola G4 plus or G5.

Interested in this as my Z3 Compact is on it's last legs.

But worried about unlocking (I'm on Amaysim) as Vodafone staff in the store said it costs $50 to unlock…?

I would rather buy from BigW if possible, will it cost $50?

    Cheers for any pointers!

    • I'm in a similar situation. Did you end up getting one and, if so, how did theunlocking work out for you?

      • Ordered from BigW - just waiting to arrive.. will let you know.

        • Please do! I have read here that Vodafone unlocks all of its post-paid phones for free on their website. My understanding is that these are post-paid?

        • +1

@elektron: Hey Elktron - I will do.. in fact I have a couple of people I work with who are eager to know. And of course I'm hoping I don't have to lay out $50 for a code.

        • +1

@elektron: And also I was in the Vodafone store and one of their staff punched in an IMEI from a box of an XA into that website and it came up with $50 ($25 'Service fee', $25 for the unlock). So I really don't know!

        • @beebul: That's not a good sign!!

        • @beebul: Looks like the ones sold at stores (Harvey Norman, Target, Big W etc) are pre-paid after all…

    • exact same boat here, Z3C was replaced/repaired about 6 months ago under the cracked screen scenario and now its barely functional……

      • +2

I had the same issue with my Z5C out of warranty 2-3 months ago, which became unusable even with a relatively minor crack. I didn't bother repairing it and bought the Xperia X for $400 from JB on the same day. Had this deal been available at the time, especially with Nougat fixing the battery issue, I would have jumped on it instead.

I have to say that very happy with the Xperia X though, in fact liking it better than the Z5C, with more screen real estate, higher pixel density and no overheating issue.

I'm now very interested in the XA at this price as a present for someone with a phone on its last legs but easy unlocking is critical.

        • I'm might be easy but not cheap…

        • +1

@beebul: I know, but at the time the cheapest XA was available for is $200 and I'd heard a lot about the bad battery life, which has since been resolved by the N update. The camera's are also not in the same league as what I'm used to with the Z5C.

I knew that if I'd gone for the XA it would have felt like a compromise coming from a recent flagship and I would have wanted to upgrade it sooner rather than later. So yes, I paid more but I don't feel like I have compromised on anything and if I don't crack the screen it will, hopefully, stay current for twice as long.

@elektron: Sorry I meant cheap to unlock.. we will see mine has been dispatched..

        • +1

@beebul: No worries, thought you were talking about the replacement phone.

        • +1

@beebul: I can't believe it but look like I missed out, as the price is now back up to $199!

Looks like you did well by jumping on it in the last few days - I just hopw the unlock doesn't ruin the value for you!

        • +1

@elektron: cheers mate, it's meant to arrive today. We shall see…

        • @beebul: Did it arrive last week? How did you go with the activation??

Patiently waiting to hear from you before pulling the trigger. It's currently $169 at Target.

        • @elektron: Hi Elekron yes I got it last week. Had to bite the bullet and pay the $50 I'm afraid, I couldn't find any cheaper way to unlock that didn't smell like a scam.

It's an okay phone, coming from the Z3 compact the screen is a little underwhelming and the camera isn't great but for the money I'm fairly happy with the purchase…

          Good luck man!

        • @beebul: Thanks for the update, buddy!

$50 for the unlock? Ouch! That diminishes the value by quite a bit!

A couple of follow up questions if you don't mind.

          1) Did it update to 7.0 / Nougat after you set it up?

          2) If so, how has the battery life been?

        • +1

@elektron: Yep I was unhappy about the $50 but I couldn't find a way around it. I'm sure someone will now pipe up with a way to unlock for five bucks but that won't help me ;)

It hasn't updated to Nougat yet which is annoying.. battery has been okay but I haven't had much time to use it with 4g yet so we shall see.. Been trying to force Nougat on there but it insists I have the latest version! I think Sony had problems with the Nougat rollout. I want Nougat!

Sorry been a really busy weekend so not had much time to test :)

It's definitely a nice phone even around the $200 mark.. my main quarms are colours are a bit washed out/ the screen is a bit too responsive which results in errors swiping messages (I use SwiftKey) / vibration for things (turning on/off and other times) is annoying.. and currently no Nougat!

        • @beebul: Thanks!

Yes, Nougat brings real performance improvements. I've seen it on the XA Ultra and the happy owner said it was like getting a brand new phone. Not sure why it's available for the Ultra variant but not for the 'regular' XA.

I have bought unlock codes on eBay in the past - may try my luck there again.
