Can I use my iPhone before I claim TRS refund in 2 Days

I just bought an iphone 7 in the past 48 hours and am traveling in the next 4 days, I paid about $1300 and I have my name and address on the receipt.
It's worth noting that I am an Aussie going to Europe for a few months for a holiday and will return.

Am I able to break the plastic seal of the iphone box and use it for the few days before my flight or will this void the GST refund ?

Thanks in advance, I tried googling the forum and web with little luck.

Yes, I've done that. Item can be opened and in use. I've done it with my Nexus and with a Samsonite check in luggage…

    • Thanks wkapri ! :) I can start using my much needed new phone. Do I need to bring the box and all accessories to the airport ?

      • Why not?
You could just throw them away after claiming.

I've claimed an iPhone two times in the past (in 2013 & January this year) and both times they only checked if you have the phone (and that was just a quick 1 second glance) and didn't bother asking for the box. So don't worry you can leave the box & accessories at home :)

        • thanks ! :)

        • Yep, same experience for me. I had the box, they didn't look. Barely even looked at my phone. YMMV.

  • Yes you can, all you need to show is the phone and the receipt

But technically you are not meant to bring it back into the country, otherwise technically you have to pay the GST back, right?

There's nothing illegal about bringing TRS goods back, you just have to pay the duty if value (minus depreciation) is over the concession. Same as if you had bought the goods overseas. The whole idea of the TRS refund is with the same mechanism to refund tourists and to allow residents to do their duty free shopping here instead of overseas.
