How Much Would You Pay for Second Hand Desktop PC?

I'm looking to buy a second hand desktop pc for mainly work purposes when I decide to work from home. The seller is asking for ~$350 do you think it's worth it.

The specs are:

Intel i7 950 @ 3.07 Ghz 8 threads
8GB RAM
Win10 Enterprise edition, activated
Includes Ms Office 2016 Professional Plus full version (worth $599)
Antec case with 500W high end power supply
NVIVIA GeForce GT 240 Graphics card, with HDMI, DVI and DSub connector ( can connect up to three monitors)
Two HDD installed with total 500GB
Dual Gigabit LAN
Gigabyte Motherboard with eSata and USB3

Philips HD Monitor included
Keyboard and mouse included

How much should I pay?

Seems like a deal to me. With the screen and Office Pro its a good price.

    I'd ask for about $3.50

Get outta here you Loch Ness monsta.

  • I don't have much experience buying 2nd hand PCs but my opinion is $350 seems fair for that computer plus a monitor if the monitor still works well (no weird colours or flickering).

However, I think the hard drive capacity could be a reason for you to negotiate a lower price, especially if you later want to use this PC as a media storage server using Plex.

  • Honestly, not more than $200.

The computer its self is probably worth about $100 and I would not trust those hard drives.

I cant remember the last time I saw a hard drive capacities that low (probably 2x 250GB configuration) i.e. higher chance of failure.

The only good part of the deal I see is that the monitor is included, do you have the model number of the monitor?

  • Your main issue is probably motherboard.

The 950 is a socket LGA 1366 processor. From memory almost all the LGA 1366 motherboards are SATA II and USB 2. There are exceptions at the end of the sockets production such as ASUS x58 Sabretooth motherboard though.

Just 950 CPU & Sabretooth mobo is listed on ebay for $300 or so, not sure about prices they were actually being sold for so if it's a Sabretooth board it's possibly a good bargain, treat with caution otherwise.

However you possibly can add PCI or PCI-e cards to get these interfaces.

  • It looks like Windows 10 and MS Office are from grey key sites or pirated (so check for activation from System). No one in the right frame of mind will buy the highest end version of these software to put in such a low end pc.

It'a a very old i7, could have been high-end when it was first bought.

It's worth next to nothing, the CPU and motherboard could be up to 9 years old because that series processor hit the market in 2008.

Your friend isn't ripping you off as such but with such old hardware you'll be running on borrowed time from day 1, it'll probably only have 1 USB3 port and it'll be difficult to find replacement parts should you need them.

Maybe take a look at the Grays Online site and see what they have up for grabs?

    • Is it a friend or just a random seller

      • Ah yeah, made an assumption there and now post is locked from editing.

$150 tops for that ancient thing…

    Thanks for the comments.

Just to add, I'm buying the PC on Gumtree (so not a friend). If I don't have to spend this, what better options do I have for that price point?

To add, I already own a 17 inch old Samsung monitor, key board and mouse. I also own a product key for windows 8 pro that I purchased for $14 way back in 2012 thanks to Ozbargain.

Should I just get a AMD tower for under $350?

Go to BudgetPC.com.au and have a look at what they offer. A second-generation Core i5 should be around $200 and a first generation one even less than that.

      a 3rd generation i5 is around $250

and on ebay there was this deal. Expired but CLAP10 code still usable.

      • This is a great suggestion and it includes windows 7 COA so you can install Windows 10 using the Windows 7 key. Spend another $100 or so and buy a new ssd to replace the hdd and it will very quick. The Dell' SFF's only drawback is the low wattage power supply and it will only take half height cards but for an everyday PC they are very good as I have one I bought at auction. Buying 9 year old hardware is a waste of money.

    • Ask this question on overclockerAU forums. They have an active second hand community with much better knowledge of second hand prices.

There's also a second hand trading section, but you have to be a member for 3 months until it unlocks.

  • Make sure Ms Office and OS comes with genuine sticker or copy of actual invoice.
if hardware died, you might have issues reinstalling to a new PC ;)

For $350, you can get a better second hand system in graysonline minus ms office, but you can always get office live.

  • Try ebay these ones seem pretty cheap and u can use the CLAP10 code to get it down a bit more.

Wouldn't pay more than $100 unless the OS and Office is legit but I'll be skeptical. The PC is also a first gen of the intel i-core series.

Windows 10 enterprise - most likely pirated version
Office Pro Plus 2016 - another pirated version.

They can only be legally sourced if you have a volume licence which normally a large company/enterprise company can afford. That's why I'm a bit skeptical.

This. And both might be KMS which means it'll stop working in 30-90 days whatever it is now days. Avoid.

  • $100 maxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Update: based on the comments above, I decided to give it a miss. Instead picked up a new tower (AMD A8 7650k 3.8ghz, 8gb Ram and 1TB HDD) from eBay auction for $300 incl delivery. Since I already owned a copy of Windows 8 pro, I believe I don't have to spend anything more for the time. When I find a good deal will add another FHD monitor until such time my old 17 inch Samsung should get the job done.

    Thanks again for your time.
