Yeah but at least with a normal IOT bulb I can switch it off at the wall without worrying about shutting down my WiFi.

Because changing the switch to off removes all electricity from the bulb. No electricity = no WiFi extender.

If you turn the light switch off at the switch, as per potplanty's post, it would cut power to the socket in which the lamp is installed, so the lamp couldn't power its wifi extender function. This is why he would assume that the wifi extension would stop when the lights were turned off at the switch.

That's a great idea though, just incorporating it into an existing product makes a lot of sense. However, maybe not a product with such a limited life span.
