PS4 5200rpm or 7200rpm? Please Help!

Hi guys. I'm torn between a 5400 rpm 2tb portable external HDD and a 7200rpm 2tb desktop external HDD for my PS4.
I know the stock drive is 5400rpm but I'm wondering which to get.
Any help, advice or opinions based on experience would be appreciated.
Thanks.

    7200.
Better yet, get a cheap SSD and stick it in an external enclosure.

Basically it affects the load times of games, a faster read speed = games load faster.

For basically any game it wont affect its performance once loaded.

Personally Id only go for 7200 RPM or SSD.

Also if you're getting an external drive ensure it's USB3, if you buy a USB2 drive that will be ~10x slower no matter the disk speed.

Ps4 won't let you use a usb 2 drive at all

  • One doesn't require external power (5400, portable) and is powered by the USB port
Other requires external power (7200, desktop). If you don't have a spare socket near the ps4, then go with the portable one.

5400 is slightly slower in loading games than the 7200, not noticeably huge speed differences in comparison to an SSD.

  • tbh it wont make an significant noticeable difference even if you put in a SSD into the ps4, it doesnt show a significant increase in speed like how it does for a PC. if you ask me ill choose the 7200rpm just because its has a higher revolutions per minute, but i know it will make little difference in a ps4.

  • surprised nobody has said it yet, but 7200 is likely to run hotter, and u dont want that on a ps4.

id go a SSD instead of a 7200, on this alone.

    • Yeah I know 7200rpm run hotter, but this is for an external HDD, not for replacing the stock drive.

    • Heat won't be an issue since its an external desktop HDD in a enclosure that will have its own airflow.

If it was an internal 2.5" drive that runs 7200rpm then yes it will be hotter.

  • Has Ps4 now got support for external hard drives?

Yes, since update 4.50 as far as I'm aware

      • yay! now to get another hard drive…

I don't think it would make any difference with either 5400 & 7200 since the bottleneck would be at USB port? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm using Firecuda 2.5" 2tb hybrid with Orico enclosure. Works fine here.

    • If its USB 2 that sounds correct to me.

    • PS4 uses USB3.0 which has a theoretical max transfer rate of 5gbps (640MBps). So the ports are not the limiting factor here. That is why your firecuda still works fine and you are still getting the benefit of the SSD transfer rate which is roughly 500MBps. All these is assuming your HDD enclosure is fully USB 3.0 compliant.

      • Ahh cool, didn't know PS4 is now using USB 3.0.

  • I have exactly this drive inside my launch PS4:

Yep, they released the external support for HDD couple of months after I upgraded it :|

  • PS4 doesn't benefit much from 7200rpm or SSD. Minor gains in most games.
    PS4 pro benefits more.
