I vaguely remember the news was saying energy rates are expected to come down due to certain reasons, but I can't find any references to it now. Anyhow, got an email from Energy Australia advising rate increase, yet again, like clockwork. What gives?!

Probably this:

Uh huh sure.
The only good news prior to that was the elimination of the Carbon Tax that almost destroyed Australia by increasing prices by 10%. Nobody seems worried that prices had basically doubled over the previous decade, and in order to save me from the shock of prices going down, my power company increased its prices by 10%. Good job everyone!
Good thing those discounts are coming: http://www.smh.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/energyaustra…
What gives?!
Your politicians decided a tiny number of extremely wealthy people were more important than you and created a system where you're forced to pay the highest energy prices in the world to make this group of people wealthier.
If you want this to continue just vote Liberal or Labour next election.
We're a captive market. :(

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha … cough cough … ha ha ha ha ha ha
combustion heaters?
The price of electricity and gas is like the price of petrol. When there are shortages or other reasons to justify a price increase the price goes up. When those reasons cease to exist the price stays there or retreats by a very minimal amount.
And there is absolutely nothing people can do other than perhaps reduce consumption. But even then in case of electricity and gas they will still get you by rising the daily service fee.
As airal3rt says above:they have you over a barrel and will f%*k you accordingly
If you want more evidence that this has nothing to do with wholesale energy prices: one of the scum announcing price increases is Energy Australia.
Energy Australia is a generator as well as a retailer and yet up goes the price by 20%, same as Origin who is not a generator.
I wonder if its worthwhile switching to a new provider
You don't have to actually switch, just tell them about a better deal from the competition, they will give you some discount.
The price of goods/services is determined by what can they can squeeze out of the consumer, and bears no relevance to the production/acquisition costs. Everyone needs energy so they have you over a barrel and will f%*k you accordingly.
