Storing Kitchen Knives in Drawer

I'm soon moving into a new home and have bought some quality Wusthof knives. Following recommendations of fellow OzBarganiers I've bought 3 individual knives (20cm Cook's knife, 16cm Cook's knife & 20cm Bread knife)

Am wondering those of you with individual knives rather than blocks how do you store them and why?
Most practical/best for knives/easiest etc.

Looking around online magnetic strips seems to be the most popular opinion however I don't like the aesthetic of them and feel it would blunt/scratch them having metal make contact with the blade?

As such am leaning towards an in drawer organiser, something like

Tips and input in greatly appreciated :)

Not sure how your logic determines that a magnetic strip that doesn't even touch the cutting edge (unless you replace the knife carelessly) will blunt a knife more than a wooden block where the blade is touching the wood in storage and will slide against it to some extent no matter how carefully you place and pick up the knives?
I use a knife block but invert the knives so that the cutting edge doesn't "slice" into the wood as you insert/pull out.

    • In my mind wood being a softer material than metal would be less likely to damage the knife than a magnetic metal strip. I'm sure the 'damage' would be minimal to non existent but the look of a magnetic strip hanging on a wall is my main deterrent in choosing this option anyway.

Inverting knives in a wooden block is a great tip for though with blocks though!

      • The Wusthof block which I was gifted recently has the knives orientated sideways instead of up and down. But as you mentioned, need a block.

  • I really like that organiser you linked. Much easier to access knives than a block with it's careful insertion and removal. As for the knife getting damaged by the wood - if you're careful I can't see it doing much damage at all. Sometimes when sharpening I will use wood to gently pull off the burr on the edge. It's fine.

  • We use this knife block from Bodum. https://www.bodum.com/gb/en/11089-01

It's much more useful than a wooden one with pre-cut slots which a lot of knives won't fit if not from the same brand. It's a lot cleaner too, you can take out everything and wash them. Obviously this one will go on the benchtop so not sure if you like the look, but like you, I didn't get a full block, I just have two Global knives, and a small Wusthof paring knife and I put them in the Bodum knife block.

I bought mine from Peters of Kensington a few years ago so I'm not sure what the cheapest price is at the moment, but it should be pretty easy to find as Bodum is everywhere these days.

    • Definitely seems like a good solution for most people buying individual knives.

Unfortunately won't work for me as we don't want them on display (small kitchen area and trying to keep it as organiser and clutter free) Have the intention of storing everything in drawers and cupboards.

Thanks for the reply and advice for other owners though!

I store my chefs knives in my gun safe.

I don't know why I found this funny, but I did.
      Thankyou sir

    • I don't even have a knife, let alone many knives to necessitate a knife safe

  • A real knife chef would have a separate scabbard for each knife, slung around his waist, ready to cut the vegetables at a moment's notice.

Get a knife guard for each knife from eBay, that's what I was told when I started my apprenticeship, nice plastic covers that protect the edge
