Was I Overcharged for My iPhone Repair?

My iPhone took a tragic fall yesterday! but the LCD was working fine. I went into Repair Mate bc they seemed to have decent reviews and the repairer pointed out a tiny white spot which was really only slightly noticeable when the background was white. I was told I had to pay for the full LCD and Screen repair ($125 instead of $85 for the glass only repair). They refused to just replace the glass because removing the damage glass would cause "more damage" to the LCD. I ended up paying cos I really needed my phone fixed immediately.

They also tried to convince me to get the back shell of my phone fixed bc apparently it was bent (I hardly noticed so it wasn't something I wanted fixed). I honestly left feeling a bit skeptical, why offer glass only replacement if you'll refuse to service a customer when they ask for that cheaper option. What are your thoughts? was I overcharged for my screen repair? or am I just being a lil stingy? nothing much I can do after the fact, the phone is fully functional. I'm just wondering if anybody else has had this experience with repairs.

You got ripped a new one. Should of said no and went elsewhere

Hard to say without actually seeing it. It's true that if the LCD is damaged then doing just the glass can exacerbate it. Maybe they've had a lot of customers with the same issue come back and complain?

That said, they make money from inexperienced customers who don't shop around.

Only advice I can give is to always shop around and research.

you paid 40 dollars more for convenience… you said it yourself…you needed it done straight away… I'm sure if shopped around for the next day, you could of found a better price… but you waste your own time.

at the end of the day you have to gauge on how urgent you need these things done..

$125 for the LCD + glass replacement sounds very cheap. I'm guessing they didn't really replace it or they put in a refurb part and will re-sell the old part.

Always ask for the old parts back, so they can't re-sell them.

    • i'll keep that in mind for the future!

is hoarding old damaged parts the ozbargain way?

      • is hoarding old damaged parts the ozbargain way?

Who said anything about hoarding them? It's just a strategy to try to make the repairing is doing what they say they will.

If the parts are usable, the repairer probably wont want to give them back (or will try to swap them out for unusable parts).

You can bin them as soon as you walk out of the shop.

    • Thats a good way.

  • nothing much I can do after the fact

Phone them up, ask them how much for an LCD replacement. Write a complaint to fair trading in your state.

You might not get your money back, but it'll create some hassle for the shop and might save someone else.

    • might save someone else.

The hassle and imo, non-valid fair trading complaint isn't going to 'save' anyone. People can only save themselves by doing their research. Being lazy usually comes at a cost.

      • ye I agree with it not being a valid fair trading complaint, just gonna go else where if it ever happens again

      • non-valid fair trading complaint

If they've charged for a repair they haven't performed, it's a valid complaint.

        isn't going to 'save' anyone

It might cause the small business to change their behaviour … Nothing will definitely happens, if the OP does nothing.

Except that is not the OPs issue. The issue is overcharging, not for non-delivery for a charged service.

Assuming fair trading doesn't dump the complaint in the bin. Im sure fair trading and ACCC get their entertainment from ridiculous complaints. Imagine filing a complaint every time you realised you bought apples that were $1 more expensive than other stores.

    Too late now…

  • Price sounds about right…

  • you bought an iphone. you got shafted in the beginning.

    • Ehh you should see Samsung repair costs.

  • ($125 instead of $85 for the glass only repair). You know this so probably ripped.
