Its a way to automate things on your phone using preprogrammed tags. Your phone has to have NFC feature to make use of these tags.
Example of uses of these NFC tag.
Enable wifi on your phone when you get home.
Another tag could open a program in your phone.

In essence, it simply the powerless and wireless transmission of digital data - this data may be to unlock a lock, open a function in your phone or send a webhook to trigger an online event.
It's the same technology used in Bank cards, Transit Cards, Security Cards, Nintendo Amiboos, etc.
