[Suggestions] Toys for Kids (1 - 3 Years Old)

Hey guys,

Looking for some advice on toys for kids. I’ve got a nephew (1 and 1/2 year old) and a niece (3 years old) that are living with my sister in California. Because of the distance we only see each other around once a year, and this year we might not get to see each other (sister is pregnant can’t travel while I’m travelling to see my folks). I want to get some toys for them, something they’d really love and also remember me by as we don’t meet very often. The niece loves peppa pig and plays with tiny peppa pig figurines while the nephew is still at that age of discovering what he likes (and breaking things!). Any suggestions on what to get these guys as a gift from the aunt? Something they’ll enjoy and last at least a year with them. I’m thinking lego but that might be a too advanced for them.

I’ve manage to set aside a budget of $100 for both. Oh it also has to fit in a medium sized luggage too.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Presumably your folks are in America? If so then I would wait until you get to America to buy something. The cost will probably be lower and the range will be greater. The other option is to look at something like Amazon so you can get them delivered directly to the sister. You might even get free postage for it, so you don't need to cart anything.

If you want to get them something that it is unlikely they can get in the states then I would be looking for something with an Australian slant - like a wooden puzzle with Australian animals, etc or soft toys based on Australian animals. (Not the tacky touristy ones, but something with a bit of quality).

  • Kmart has some really good and cheap wooden toys - trains, blocks etc. Would be good for the 1yo :)

As to the 3yo whatever you get will be overlooked in a few months lol some sort of peppa plush toy will probably be cuddled :)

No need to spend $50 each at that age

  • Melissa & Doug, latch board. $34 from toys r us on sale at the moment at the Parramatta store anyway.

  • Paw Patrol & Frozen merchandise.

How about a recordable book and you read them nursery rhymes or a story.

  • Sorry to be a downer, but I sincerely doubt any toy you buy them will be something they "remember you by" unfortunately. Nothing personal, just the way toddlers/kids are in general.

Some sort of native Australian animal plush toy maybe? (kangaroo, koala, platypus etc)

Agree with @try2bhelpful that toys in the States are much cheaper than in Oz. Don't spend the $100 all at once - toddlers are unappreciative little b*stards with short memories and will cast aside your painstakingly selected gift as soon as the next fidget spinner comes along (Source: have toddlers). Jokes aside though, it'll probably be more fun (and memorable) for them if you send them a few smaller gifts throughout the year via Amazon. They'll be very excited to get surprises in the mail.

Here are my suggestions for your niece:

Start a Beanie Boo collection - you could send her a different one every month for a year with your $100 budget

    And your nephew:

Definitely many smaller toys in the mail, or depending how long you're with them, a small surprise every day or two (if they've been good) ;)
