Looking for 4x4 Ute Reccomendations

Hi everyone, I am in the market for a 4x4 Ute sometime in the next 18-24 months and would like some suggestions to go out and look at.
there is a few tech features that we want:
Diesel
Adaptive Cruise Control
Automatic Lights (auto high beam would be nice in addition)
Automatic Windscreen Wipers
Reverse Camera and Sensors (front ones would be nice too)
Push Button Start and smart keyless entry

I have been looking around but haven't found anything to take our fancy just yet.

    1.5 - 2years time?

    WTF?

    Why are you looking now?!

Models change in 6 months… In 2 years there could be a whole new model!

I agree, and also looking at your requirements… keep saving!

      • seeing as we are also looking at caravan, i don't think money is an issue but thanks for your helpful comment.

    • i am posting now to see what experiences people have.
i like to do my research well in advance, while there may be some models coming out in 6 months - which ones are they?
i understand that in 2 years there could be new models but i am hoping people out there are more in tune with the cycles than I am. for most cars there is a 5 year cycle with half lifetime refresh which doesnt add too much.

I know that mazda is going to be collaborating with isuzu but that isnt due out until 2020
we have just had new amarok, isuzu (refresh?) and ford (refresh) so we are 2-3 years away with those
i think we may be due for a hilux and holden but just trying to look around for what is out there or if there is any manufacturers i have missed.

      • Seriously there is zero point in looking now.

        Zero
        Zilch
        None

What you rule out now because it doesn't have the features you want, will likely have it in 18 months.

      • Amarok is not new, just a refresh, with a bigger engine.
Isuzu not new, but might be in the pipeline given the Mazda relationship
Ford is not new, but probably got another year or two
        Hilux is pretty new.
Holden will be doing something once the Isuzu thing ends (current Colorado and Isuzu are twins)
Mazda will upgrade soon with Isuzu, ending ford partnership - might also prompt ford to change.
        Nissan is pretty new.
Then there is Mercedes and Renault borrowing the Nissan platform and upping the price.
Mitsubishi can't be far off a big makeover, the triton is old.

From all that there no point looking now unless you are buying now, only the Nissan and hilux are likely to be similar in your timeframe.

Why do you want a push button start? Unless you have a medical condition that prevents you front twisting a key, there is no functional benefit of a push start button.
All it does is causes problems and it would be very expensive to fix when it eventually stops working.

    • convenience is a functional benefit.
not having to dig a key out of my pocket its a functional benefit.
i can see why some don't like push button start but when it is couples with smart entry, it is wonderful not having to screw around with a key. with my mazda3 i can unlock and open the car from with one hand, jump in put my foot on the brake, push the button and have the car start itself from there while putting my seatbelt on. I personally love it.

  • hilux.

    • been looking at the sr5, is hilux due for a refresh?
will hilux be getting an upgrade to 3.1-3.5t like everyone else?

Got all the important features covered.

Now what about other features like load or towing capacity? Carrying a family of bikes or couple of canoes? Dragging all your tools around the city measuring up for quotes you'll never provide or just collecting the kids from soccer?

Are you planning on conquering the Gibb River road towing a 20ft off road caravan, or exploring The high country after heavy rain? Or is it going to need 4wd to get onto the nature strip to wash it every weekend?

I vote for the new Mercedes twin cab, you seem to need luxury features with no interest in the rest of the ute. (it's not out yet, but should be by the time you want to buy)

    • towing capacity on most of the 4x4 utes are roughly the same - 3.1-3.5 tonne but anything over 3 tonne would be fine.
i need to add to the list the trailer sway control as well.

no off road while towing a caravan, but we are also looking at a 21ft caravan

need 4wd so we can take it to the beach, and bush on the weekend - nothing too major but needs to be capable.

yes i listed luxury features, no i dont want the mercedes. am currently looking at hilux sr5 and amarok v6 and ranger wildtrack

    • why not just get the Nissan Navara, I thought the merc is based on that?

      • +1

i keep forgetting nissan, thanks will take a look.

        • yes, I did remember correctly - the merc is based off the Nissan - http://www.motoring.com.au/mercedes-benz-x-class-ute-reveale…
another story says, It’s based on the same platform as the Nissan Navara, from which it also borrows some engines and drivelines, and will even be built by the Japanese car-maker in its factories.

so, check what Nissan already offers.

but remember just becuase there may not be a whole new model, the existing models may get the features you are looking for when they refresh every 2 years.

@PVA: I remember now - what originally turned me off is seeing the cvt mentioned in the build my navara but lookin at the specs you get a 7sp auto which will be great for towing on the highway.

        • @nightshaide:
or maybe he Renault ute will be out (nissan/renault based too)

          https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/2018-renault-alaskan-u…

  • Nissan or Toyota - everything else just copied - Isuzu was the colorado or colorado was the isuzu or something, tritons suck, amoraks may as well be volkswagon golfs, rangers only became known in the PX range when little man syndrome was on the rise and they beefed up the body, BT50's???
