I've been thinking of getting an ABN, do I need to demonstrate any kind of business model or anything? or just pick a name and run with it?

  You can just get a Abn, they will take it off your after a yr or so if you havent demonstrated anything though.

  Don't see why not. Only qualifier is that you are a business member using an ABN
