Help Buying a Scientific Calculator

Hi all,

I'm a finance student. I've been using the Fx-82AU for years now. I broke it just yesterday, and my exams are a week away.

I need to get a new one, but never realized how expensive they were! $30-$40!

I need the calculator ASAP (next couple days would be ideal, so I can study!!!) Can anyone please recommend a place to buy the cheapest calculator?

Thanks!

  • Why does everyone use a Casio FX82AU

    • Alot of unis only approve the fx-82xx for exams.

I feel like the fx 82au or now the fx100au is just the standard. It's board approved. I've only ever used this, and never been able to fault it.

Do you recommend anything else? Reason?

I'm up for suggestions - thanks Brodstar <3

    I went through uni with a FX991ES-Plus.

got it from ebay for $30 aud within about 3 days. $30 isn't much to pay for a calculator that you will use for a few years though.

If you still have a Co-op bookshop membership (remember those!?) you can also buy a range of calcs from their physical or online stores for a lower price. Here's a Canon one for just a few dollars (membership required)

also there are smartphone apps that emulate a Casio calculator, will perhaps tide you over till you get a real Casio. Look on the Google playstore.

    • You can't bring your phone into exams!!

Your best bet is to find the best price you can and then price match at Officeworks for 5% off. I can already see them online for $35 or so from legitimate stores. Don't worry about a few bucks at the end of the day, get it ASAP and start studying - exams are much more important than saving a few dollars.

Would also recommend Texas Instruments' TI-30XB, if being a Casio isn't a necessity. Currently $32 at Officeworks.
Also aren't you the guy that spent $12k on your 21st?? Not sure why you're fretting over $30-40 for a calculator :P

      That's probably why he's (profanity) himself over $30-40 :P

User name checks out :P hehe

  • I remember getting the fx 100au off some guy from gumtree for $5 though to be fair it cost me like 5 dollars for the fare to their house and back. Honestly Gumtree is the only cheapest place I can think of, if no one on any buy and sell uni site is selling any in this time frame?

You might also want to ask your university people, I remember my uni had spare calculators you could borrow for the exam, and you may be able to borrow for a few days earlier if you ask nicely.

If exam is coming up, i suggest you replace the same model as the I've you have previously. Don't want to spend time learning a different model.

    • yea unless its a very similar model casio i wouldnt want to think about touching a different calculator a week before an exam. you dont wanna waste a single second trying to find pi in the middle of an exam

but for finance? why not look into a finance calculator in the new semester? i dont know the difference but they are around and im pretty sure they are much cheaper than scientific calcs

    • Agree, I still have horrible memories from 20 years when I was at uni and got a new HP reverse polish calculator the week before an exam and completely bombed because I couldn't do half of what I needed to do on the calculator.

  • I bought the Casio 100 fx100 au plus.
Where do u live, u can borrow mine

I actually bought a 2nd one in case, but returned it the next day after exam

  • Texas Instruments 36X Pro is easily the best. USD~18 on Amazon. HP RPN calculators are quite nice. HP-35S is very good, but more expensive.

I buy all my calculators from Amazon…cheaper than Australia by far and for stupid reasons, many Australian calcs drop the solar panel.

Fx-82AU is $30-40 standard, can be picked up for about half that during back to school sales.

  • If you uni has a buy/sell group, you'll probably see them a lot when they clear stuff out :) I always see the fx82au on sale for maybe 10 bucks when students do that.

  • There is a generic fx-82 clone that is usually sold at Officeworks for $10. The brand is called InSystem and the model IN-82SC. Exact same looking and function as the fx-82. I believe its also allowed into exams (at least the uni I go to does).

There is no point learning how to use a financial calculator at this time. I bought the TI one but cant really be arsed to learn the functions. Not really worthwhile unless you're doing something like CFA. With exams a week away, its really not a risk you wanna take.

  • I realise mobile not allowed in exams but for study you could try using a free app like
