Where is the cheapest place to exchange my aussies to American.

Banks or those small foreign exchange places?

I know these places can charge quite a bit in fees….

  • Depends on what you are planning to do.

If its for a trip to the US and you have time, keep your Ozzie dollars and get a Wizard Mastercard.

NO transaction fees so you can even pay for maccas with your credit card and get the best exchange rate around.

If you have US friends etc, when you go out for meals and go dutch you pay on card and collect the cash from them.

    Sydney Airport sucks.

Are you travelling elsewhere? More info will enable more help to be given

    • If you load up a positive balance you can also use the Wizard Mastercard to get money from ATMs with no fees.

  • I am travelling around Asia. Mainly country side so no ATMs/Banks nearby and want to have some local currency handy.

Will be travelling for 4 weeks so getting the right amount is important.

Wizard mastercard sounds good but I will only be able to use it when travelling within the major cities.

    • Well depends on country most times better to change there. Also ozzie is accepted and its easy to change, changing to US and back incurs two sets of fees

    • I have a visa debit card. When I was in Vietnam and Malaysia I just got money out of ATMs. They charge a currency conversion fee and that's about it. No hassle.

First off when I got into Hanoi though, I just handed over a couple hundred Australian at the airport exchange, the dude just changed it for me - no need to even talk haha, and they give you a receipt :) for Vietnam it isn't usually possible/easy to change AUD to Dong here.

I guess it also depends how many times you change countries in the four weeks and where exactly you are going - Vietnam and Cambodia, for example, will on the whole be much cheaper than Thailand or Malaysia. But it also depends if you go to touristy places, etc. and how you are paying for your accomodation.

  • +1

Travelex will waive fees and also buy back unused (as if that happens!) if you are a senior. So grovel to your granny or fave old aunty and get them to do it for you.

  • use the Wizard Mastercard. Top it up with excess credit so your able to withdraw cash. best exchange rates and fees. In the US you can use your card for anything even if you buy something for a $1 so use it as much as possible, just don't lose it!

  • I'm going overseas soon too, and will be using USD. I'm just going to withdraw from the bank as it will only be a small amount
