EBAY wont give me a refund for price drop difference.

So I bought an item on 30th of may with a 10% coupon they had active. They were going for around $530~. Today the prices of all these items including mine got dropped to $372~. WTH!! That's just straight up scam. So I paid around $80 more for a sale item with a discount coupon, which is now cheaper than the sale + coupon combined. All this in 1 week!! Its not like the world is burning.

Anyway I reported ebay to ACCC.

ACCC can do hardly anything because the retailer will claim that "it's on sale" now.

All 6 sellers who are selling it dropped their prices from 530 to 360 ish. It cant be that they are all having a sale just after eBay's 15% coupon lol.

      • Yeah but that's what they'll say to the ACCC if they come knocking, I know you're annoyed but they can't really do anything about it..

    • +3

that's why you don't buy during these "selected 15-20%" sale. It's well known among Ozb community those sales means nothing these days ..Sorry mate, you got no case here, you're just one of the "fishes" who bit the bait. Plus it's more the seller's fault, Ebay don't set the price

    • I saw Myer had the 20% off. Then once it was over, their prices went down 15%, and eBay had 15% so it became 30%.

I agree this whole thing is rigged and although they are trying to drum up business before Amazon smashes them, I think they are instead leaving a bad taste in peoples mouths.

I seem to always end up feeling ripped off as the deals end up being fake each time. The fake sales ARE ILLEGAL. A sale can only be a sale if the normal price is higher, not lower than sale price.

      Anyway

This kind of thing happens in shopping all the time, it's not an online-only phenomenon.

That's why things like CC price protection exist.

    • -1

I have seen this happened but not by over $100 difference within a week.I mean retailers change their prices almost everyday but not a 30%.

      • +1

Who were the sellers and what items were in your cart? Just out of curiousity.

If they are big name sellers (like Kogan then it's possible ACCC will bite but ACCC usually has no time for small time sellers.

        • -1

Sure, I am going to think twice before dishing out $$ on ebay next time for sure. Prob wont buy anything unless its on OZB's front page.

          @Ryxxi:

Just so you know EBAY is not the one who sets the prices of the goods you buy, all they provide is a sale event, merchants can choose to be a part of it but the merchants themselves can be sneaky about it and tweak the prices prior to the sale starting.

That is why reporting eBay to ACCC won't get you any results, as it's not eBay's fault you paid a higher price during a sale. Fault lies with retailers.

It's a good idea to click on the sales / transaction history to see what people paid for it at least one week before the actual sales event began.

        • @scrimshaw: I did check the prices in feedback and there were just too many to go through each and every page. The ones I found didn't show the price, it just said "best offer accepted".

        • @Ryxxi:

I think you just got very unlucky and bought at the wrong time. I checked three other sellers peddling the same product.

They all, at roughly the same time, dropped their prices from nearly $500 dollars to less than $380.

I'd say the price change was due to either a) more competition in the market and hence more supply but less demand or b) there is a new and improved product and everybody wants to clear them out.

  • +1

ACCC can't do anything really. That's the price you agreed to when you make the purchase. Any price difference after your purchase is irrelevant. It's the spirit of a contract

  • +2

Sorry but tough t.t. That's the way it works. No one forced you to buy it early and prior to price changes

    • Cant really guess prices dropping from 530 to 371 in a week tho..This whole scenario is like insider stock trading. Sellers find about these ebay sales and hike the prices , tricking buyers into believing that they are getting good deals.

      • Lol! Maybe re read what you have written a few years from now and then you will see the humour in this

        • lol, if I can remember.

      • Tip: not sure in mobile browser, but in desktop browser you can click the number of sold items and bring out list of successfully sales on what prices.

Yeh a few days ago I bought a melon for $3, now it's $1, ~70% price difference, what a scam right?

Please learn the definition of "scam".

    • +6

I bought petrol on Tuesday for $1.45
On the following Monday it was $1.10.
SCAM!!! I'm reporting it to ACCC

      • get the bikies up there and sort these mob out.

      • I dont understand why you'd even compare it with fuel price changes. Oh thats right , you are just being a bully. Am not going to reply back again btw. so dont bother replying.

      • I know you're using that as an example as a joke, but I think its practically price fixing that the petrol price can suddenly jump 20-30c in a single day. Its not like the price of oil fluctuates by 25% on a daily basis

    • Sorry for your 70% loss. I will learn the definition of scam. Also thanks for the comparison. I will o more research on lemon prices before buying anything. especially on how to buy lemons on ebay.

      • Probably more useful to research on what you're actually entitled to and understand that just because prices go up and down, doesn't make it a scam. You win some, you lose some. You were obviously happy with the price you paid, leave it at that, no store is legally obligated to refund you the difference.

  • +6

    how old are you ?

  • +5

Wait, I don't understand your issue. You saw something at $X, you bought at $X because you were happy with that price (otherwise you wouldn't have bought). Now you're having a whinge because it's cheaper? How does that make any sense. Before you go all self-righteous, if the price went up, would you have contacted the seller and agreed to make up that price difference? Come on.

  • You weren't also buying 500g of pork, were you?

  • +6

Crap, I bought something for $500 last month and now its selling for $700. Does that mean I have to give the seller an extra $200??!!

    • +1

Of course not. Rules only apply in your favour. If they don't, then post in the forum and whinge. /s

  • Did you pay via PayPal balance or CC through PayPal.?

    • Why does it matter?

Dam I bought a car for $39,990 Driveaway last month. Now it’s only $34,990 Driveaway with free steak knives. Yep sorry, as all the others had said, nothing you can do.

Also pointed out is the dodgy sellers that up their prices during these X% Off deals for certain sellers only. If it’s say 20% like the current promo, most of those sellers will up their prices to around 15% more. So it’s still slightly cheaper with the discount that other sellers not on hte promo, but certainly not the entire 20% off. There are the odd sellers that don’t bump pricing up, but not that many. Take a look at pricing after the 11th and they’ll all be dropped again.

I avoid these sellers even with normal pricing as I just hate the price gouging tactics.

  • What's the point of the post?

  • For the select sellers promos… the eBay terms would state that the seller is not to break any trading regulations.
In same breath they want the seller to a offer a promo, generally minimum 20% - a good discount to attract customers (and the right goods, such as electronics). And with the 5 - 8% fees eBay will still charge for these promos, the seller has to fund the 20% (or whatever the promo amount is). Obviously no seller wants to make a loss (upto 28% of the sale price, including shipping..). Obviously there has to be a price change (increase) to do the sale. The seller could probably do 5 - 10% off - but eBay likes sellers to offer 20% off or more AND Free shipping.

I have looked at taking part in these promos before - but the only way I could offer 20% off or more would be to increase the price (otherwise be losing money, as eBay are not waiving their fees during these promos). Haven't played this game.

The best time to look for deals is the sitewide eBay discounts - as these are funded by eBay and not the sellers. Also check average selling price before purchasing.
