Foxtel Now

https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2017/06/is-foxtel-now-worth-th…

It seems that Foxtel are maintaining the 'packages' to protect revenue and Foxtel Now seems more like a paint job than a new service.

I guess they will stick around due to their content but I have never subscribed to Foxtel and it doesn't look like I will any time soon.

Thoughts?

  • You can be subscribed to the premium versions of Netflix, Stan and Presto for about half the price of Foxtel. Why would you ever?

Presto is dead :) (was replaced by Foxtel Now)

Too little too expensive IMO. They don't offer much above what I can get elsewhere.

If they gave me a straight sports package for $30 I'd consider it though.

What Foxtel should do is try to consolidate what's already out there. Try to strike deals with Netflix, Stan and Amazon and act as an aggregator of content. Basically Netflix would be a 'channel' and so would Stan etc. They could then have their own channels as well. Basically be cable TV for streaming on demand video. That is something I'd consider signing up to.

    • How much would you pay for the sports package just on Foxtel Go?

Accessible through tablet or mobile device only.

      • $0. TV or nothing.

        • No password for you!

        • @Mr Gradgrind: I'm ok with that :)

wow, to get all the packages its $104 per month @ 720p…
    "Premium content" at abysmal quality

    • what does the current Foxtel box HD stream at, is it 720 or 1080?

      • No idea, don't use Foxtel..can't afford it

But I know Netflix and Stan can do 4k streaming but limited content still. Foxtel should at least do Full HD streaming…maybe that's another package add on

        • yeah agreed. I really just have it to watch a-league, so it sucks to pay for a full year, and only get like 8 months viewing, so i don't mind this new foxtel now.

        • +1

          @geoffs87:

I would potentially subscribe for the A-League if it was available by itself and there were no prerequisite packages.

    • In their defence, they have said that the service is designed for people who only want one or two packages (e.g. Game of Thrones viewers).

      • Yeah its a step towards the right direction against content availability a but back again with the packages and prices.

TV shows and movies should just be 1 price to compete with Netflix and Stan
They can make the Live sports package additional add-ons to differentiate themselves from the above. That's something the above don't have.

But that's my 2 cents, I don't know their budget or business strategy or whatever. But this would entice me more with lower competing prices and content availability. Paying for certain TV shows doesn't make sense - it adds frustration to searching whats available and whats not etc. Make it all available to users and protect your exclusive content live Sports via add on.

  • Foxtel on the cheap is the $99 pack including 100gig of internet data, and home phone.

Also get 3 months free of either Sports HD or Movies and Showtime HD.

That's $9 a month for basic cable over and above the Internet bundle from Telstra.

    • Have you got a link?

      • Expired sorry I note. I signed up in February.

They've replaced it with Telstra TV for $99.

You get both on the $120 a month 2000 Gig plan now. https://www.telstra.com.au/bundles#

    • You can negotiate Foxtel Platinum with their cancellations department for $89 per month (advertised for $137).

    • How is that cheap?

      Seems very overpriced to me.

      • Well the same used to cost $155 for half the cable internet, phone, and basic foxtel. Not a bad change from my perspective.

        • I agree but in terms of having Foxtel and not having Foxtel, thats expensive!

        • @samfisher5986:

Well it depends on your monthly spend on home phone and internet….

I have high speed cable internet and would never go back to ADSL just for the sake of $25 a month. Thus foxtel costs me $9 a month at the moment.

EDIT - Typo in the package I mentioned - $99 for 1000 Gig of data, not 100.

        • @Mr Gradgrind:

It depends on the plans available to you I guess.

I opt for unlimited internet plans, which used to be cable unlimited and now NBN 100/40 unlimited.

Of course if you are stuck with Telstra they can dictate the value so yes Foxtel could end up being cheap in comparison.

        • @samfisher5986:

True. I'm in Brisbane metro so have access to a wide range of choice. Looked at downgrading to ADSL 2+ (thankfully the NBN is yet to ruin my internet speed) but it was uneconomic with startup costs and phone plans and I do like Foxtel, even now we've downgraded to basic.

I'm clinging to the sports pack for grim death though until the missus figures out the free trial is over. My justification is that I've got a couple of hundred in credit from a direct debit mixup….

        • @Mr Gradgrind:

I'm in Brisbane as well, I'm in an FTTP area though, do you mean you aren't in one?

I can't stand Foxtel personally but I also don't watch sport.

I have access to way more then Foxtel through other sources.

        • @samfisher5986:

No idea. NBN has not arrived to my suburb. I hope I am or otherwise I'll be receiving a degraded service afterwards.

I also use other sources for tv. Chromecast gets plenty of work in our home. I like the news and current affairs on Foxtel. Free to air is retarded in this department.

  • Can I buy it with Telstra Credit?

  • If I'm not mistaken - it does allow streaming to a tv now, that wasn't possible before right? (ie. with airplay, chromecast)

    My setup is ;
Stream fox live using Macbook pro to Airplay connected TV. (Apple TV required)

    my settings;
Use the 'Use as separate display' option on Macbook (Airplay options)
Watch full screen live fox on TV (via Chrome browser)
Continue to use Macbook's own display as normal for other tasks.

    :)

  • Is anyone else getting every channel on their foxtel now right now? Did foxtel open all channels up due to the GOT problem?
