Melbourne Airport to Flinders Station - Best Option?

Flying to Melbourne for the first time tonight and trying to workout what is the best way to get from the airport to Flinders station.
Its two of us arriving at 10pm tonight.

Skybus cost $35pp round trip but only goes to Southern Cross Station that means we still have to get uber or taxi to get to us Flinders.

Is this really the best option or is it better to jump into cab and go directly from airport? How much would that trip roughly cost?

Does Melbourne Airport have dedicated pick-up area for Uber? How much would that trip roughly cost?

Thanks

    Free Shuttle:
    https://www.skybus.com.au/free-city-hotel-shuttle/

The SkyBus Free City Hotel Shuttle can safely transport you between Southern Cross Station and select city accommodation – at no additional charge. The service operates from 06:00 – 22:30 weekdays and 06:00 – 19:00 on weekends.

or a Tram along Spencer Street that turns in Flinders Street…

    • I saw that but there is a chance that we will arrive after cut off time which is 22:30

    • Do you actually need to show proof of staying at one of listed accommodation?

Nah, it is a "drop and go" thing.

If it isn't going to where you are staying, just pick the drop off
closest to where you are staying.

        • Thanks for the reply. Is through experience? What's the procedure? Just turn up and say you want the Free Hotel bus? I don't want to get kicked off half way or something! lol

        • @subywagon:

          Hi,
Assuming you are getting the Skybus into Southern Cross, you will have paid for a Ticket.

When the SkyBus pulls in you then present with you, your ticket and any luggage to the Skybus City Hotel Shuttle booth (looks like https://www.skybus.com.au/uploads/content-images/city-transf… ) and say "I want to get the Courtesy Bus to ……."

Where are you trying to get to… (not that I'm stalking you) lol

Skybus takes you into Southern Cross train station - you can just catch a train from there to Flinders - it's one stop away. Or you could tram it I guess, though I wouldn't personally.

    Not sure re: Uber.

FWIW, there's also a standard public transport bus to, I believe, Broadmreadows Station. Costs bugger all. From there, get a train to Flinders?

I don't know if this link will work, but… let's try : <edited to remove non working link>

    Attempt 2: try this - https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/journey#jpsearch[action]=showPlanner

    • Please note that you will need a valid Myki to travel from Southern Cross to Flinders Street station.

  • Taxi fare is about $250 from Melbourne Airport to Flinders.

    Taxi Fare Estimator Victoria

$67 if going to Flinders Street Station to stay with the homeless.

Where are you staying, or are you catching a train somewhere?

    • Sneaky sneaky putting in Flinders (suburb). I really felt out of touch for a second.

      • +1

I kept getting Flinders the suburb when using the calculator, instead of Flinders Street Station.
OP seems a little vague on destination.

Staying right next to flinders street station

If you don't mind me asking why are you going to Flinders St station, rather than Southern Cross station?

The trams within the CBD are free so the best bet is, probably, to get the tram down Collins St (the left hand corner of Southern Cross on way out) and then either walk down Elizabeth St towards Flinders St, or do the one stop of the tram from Collins to Flinders. (Not entirely sure on whether the stop at Elizabeth is on the corner).

the link shows the free tram zone.
    https://static.ptv.vic.gov.au/siteassets/PDFs/Maps/Network-m…

If you are have accomodation in the CBD then you might be able to use the free tram to get to your hotel.

Not sure of final trams but you should be able to look it up on PTV sites.

Enjoy Melbourne there are lots of good places to eat here.

    • We are staying right next to Flinders street station.

the issue here is that we are arriving late and some services might not be working

  • Re: uber
No there is no dedicated uber pick-up zone. Uber also costs more if they picked you up from the airport.
What we did last time(if you had a valid Myki) was to catch a bus to get you out of the airport and we got picked up from a McDonald's nearby. We saved around $30 that way.

    • I've had success dropping the Uber pickup pin outside the airport, then immediately calling the driver and asking them to pick you up from the terminal.

      Has always worked for me.

      • That's how we used to do it before Sydney Airport setup dedicated pick up area for Uber.

Do you have an idea how much that trip will roughly cost?

        • I did Melbourne Airport T4 to Maribyrnong for $30 I think. But the driver somehow got lost, so it's probably cheaper than that normally.

        • @railspider:
maribyrnong is also another 10 - 15 mins away from the city

        • Uber is about $40-45 from the airport to the city.

"Flying to Melbourne for the first time tonight and trying to workout"

You sound like one heck of a health fanatic!

  • Uber… set the pin outside the airport on the freeway , call driver tell them to meet you at the public pick up point.

    • The public pickup point is the emergency lane of the tullamarine freeway. It was funny watching the exclusion zone get further and further from the terminal.

      • Get picked up at MC Donald's

  • Taxi is most effective as it would cost you about $70. But you can get one within couple of minutes and the pick you up right in front of the airport and drop you at you destination. the saving with skybus / uber will be about $10 and is not worth the extra travel time / hassle in booking uber and redirecting them to airport etc.

SkyBus then free sky is shuttle.

If you're too late, free tram.

At least one tram down Bourke or Collins will operate until 12:30am. SkyBus terminal is closer to Bourke.

Then either walk from Bourke or Collins, or take a tram along Swanston. Trams along Elizabeth will finish around 12 midnight, but trams along Swanston will run until 12:30.

Personally I would have no qualms walking from Bourke or Collins down Elizabeth or Swanston on my own with luggage at 12:30am. I'm a very tiny woman.

If thats too much, taxi or uber from the SkyBus stop at Southern Cross. $7

Welcome to Melbourne! So which option did you pick in the end? Hope it was relatively hassle free.

  • Another solution would be: Take a taxi to Airport West shopping centre then get on the 59 tram which goes all the way to the entrance of Flinders St Station in the city. Airport West is the third exit on the Tullamarine Fwy after leaving Melbourne International Airport, which connects directly onto the freeway itself.

  • Melbourne is the best city in Australia for transportation, they actually want you to stay, play and have fun. We usually use the shuttle buses from the airport. Melbourne itself is easy to navigate as well.
My first tip would have been don't stay near Flinders Street 😜

  • I have tried both public transport from Airport to Flinders Station. If you are arriving from any terminal, after you went out, go to the right. keep going until you pass terminal 4 (jetstar, tiger, etc.). Then you will see many buses, keep walking towards departure area (should be on left side) and take Route 901 bus towards Frankston at Platform 17. Stop at Broadmeadows Station, take the train to the city, it will stop at Flinders Station as well. And yes, you will need Myki card. Last bus is 11:43 pm. transport PTV Journey Planner

    Cost:
    - Route 901 : $2.80 (Zone 2)
    - Train : $4.10 (Zone 1 and 2)

    Hope this helps.

So we ended up using skybus and then their free shuttle. All worked out quite well however we have to wait 25min for skybus as they we all full which I think should be managed little bit more better if that's the only option for list of people to get from airport.

    • So did you have to pay for the skybus?

      • Yes $35 for return trip

  • Uber has worked well for me. To near Victoria market area has costed me $34-37 average over a few times. Like above, drop pin to outside exclusion zone and ring driver.
