I am on separate cable internet with a gateway modem, if I change to NBN on the phone line with a new modem will it be slower

I am with Telstra and they want me to change free of charge, I was using ADSL before and it was too slow, hence I got the separate cable internet and it is much faster than ADSL, but now they want me to get back to the phone line with new modem but connected to fiber, 4 persons using internet with streaming, on wireless, will there be a loss of speed Thanks

  • What speeds are you currently getting at the moment? What speeds are they offering you at the same price for Fttn? I would have thought your cable connection would be faster, depending on what area you're in. Check out this thread: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2566867

  • At first I was pretty cynical about the speed of NBN on FTTN. I was getting a max of 6mbps on ADSL2+ before but after moving to FTTN, I can get speeds up to 96mbps.

4 persons using internet with streaming, on wireless, will there be a loss of speed

I don't think that is a factor considering, and I'm only assuming, you are currently using a similar setup of 4 people on cable. This will only affect how much of the max speed from FTTN each person receive it should not affect max FTTN speed.

Of course there are a few factors in what speed you will actually achieve though. For example, how far away are you from the node? You can have a rough estimates about the speed based on the distance.

Will your area be crazy saturated with users? The more users there are, the more likely the company may not be able to provide enough bandwidth.

I'm sure there are other, more qualified people to answer your questions but the two issues I raised above will be part of what speed you will get.

-Edit- Having said all that, FTTN is still crap considering I'm already hitting the hardware maximum speed… if it was FTTP/FTTH, this speed would merely be a provider maximum.

  • +1

I'm a bit confused, you have HFC (Cable) yet moving to the FTTN? I would of thought they would move you to the NBN HFC not NBN FTTN which doesn't make sense…

Can you double-check what NBN tech is in your area by asking Telstra? NBNCo seems to have removed that from their website address checker

EDIT: You can use iiNet's website still to check which connection is available at your address.

  • Thankyou

  • Go back to the phone line. With new modem but connected to fiber, 4 persons using internet with streaming. Dont think about speed loss its a good option.

  • Store credit only
Hi What is the law about store credit only. I purchased a Head collar for my pet for $40 from "Pets @ Chadstone" found same item for $18 at another shop and purchased, went to return my first purchase sealed unopened, they say the do not give money back, only store credit. It is on the fine print on the receipt that refunds for change of mind is not permitted which I did not read the fine print at the time.I do not want to go to this store again with their credit note as they are extremely over priced
What is the Australian Consumer Law and does the shop have to inform that they do not give money back at the time of purchase?????
    Thanks
    Tissa
