What Is Your Monthly Mobile Data Usage?

Hi All,

I am currently on the hunt for a new pre-paid mobile plan I am after some advice/recommendations in regards to how much data I should have as a minimum on my monthly pre-paid plan.

I have recently signed up to Apple Music as I have a new job which requires me to commute 1 hour each way Monday to Friday (10 hours commuting each week) and it will be handy to have great supply of music to listen to. Aside from Apple Music, I really don't use much of data aside from a little web browsing (30 minutes per day) (I am connected to Wifi when at home and at work).

Currently I am with Boost, who have Apple Music streaming free but this offer ends at the end of June.

I prefer pre paid plans so I am not locked into any contract which enables me to the freedom so switch around if required.

My questions are:

  • What is your approximate monthly data usage?
  • What is a minimum amount of data you would recommend for say 10 hours of Apple Music Streaming per week? (40 hours per month) and a little web browsing - 30 minutes per day (when not connected to WiFi
  • What prepaid plans do you recommend? Preferably to pay upfront for 365 days

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers,
:)

  • doesnt optus have free music streaming for spotify and others - try the one that offers that.

then you dont need to worry about how much data you use.

    • About 10-12GB. Watch a lot of catch-up TV, Netflix, Youtube etc. on the bus and things like that.

    • I'd say 1-2GB, depending on what kind of stuff your browsing, social media uses quite a bit due to all the photos and videos. Apple Music wouldn't use much data on normal quality, however, I think you can choose to download specific albums and playlists on there if it's anything like Spotify, so that could be an option for that.

    • If you're just living in the city/suburbs, then the Vodafone powered Kogan Mobile would be a good choice for you. Depending on how much data you think you're going to use, there is this 1GB per month plan, or this 5GB one depending on what you think will fit your needs better. Personally, as you are paying for 365 days in advance, I would go for the 5GB plan, as your needs may change later and it's always nice to have a bit of extra data.
If Vodafone isn't an option, there's the Optus powered Vaya, with a $16pm 1GB Unltd Calls & Txt Postpaid Plan, or you can get that same plan with 2GB for $6 more.
For Telstra, they took away all the good plans that let you double dip on cap allowances and google play purchases so I wouldn't recommend going with Telstra direct. Boost is a good option if you need full Telstra coverage. Otherwise, there is ALDI Mobile which uses part of the Telstra network. They offer a Large Pack with 2.5GB + Unltd calls & txt for $25 per month with data roll over.

    Hope that helps.

  • I could get by on 500MB per month with Aldi's $15/month plan. Now I have the 1 year superpack with 42GB for the whole year, I'm using about one GB per month. But if I lost the internet at my place (I am prepared to go that far to deal with housemate monetary issues) I could still download enough podcasts and audiobooks to keep myself entertained.
