Networking Tips, Events in Sydney?

Hi guys,

I'm an international student here in Sydney, just want to ask you guys are there any tips also events good for networking here in Sydney? How can I know more people here especially professional? I want to find myself a job in the Finance Industry soon but all of my friends now are students, none of them know any professional either due to the fact that we just arrived here in Sydney 2 years and then cut out most of social life due to high living cost, high tuition fee with lots of cash-in-hand work.

So is there any tips for someone like me? Any events i can go to, any websites i can look into?

Thank guys,

thx man, still looking through it :D

    • You could attend a uni alumni event. I went to a unsw one a few years ago and there was a mix of finance, engineers, law etc

I nearly didn't comment, but thought better of it.

In Australia, except in sales or entrepreneur "start-ups", people don't usually network to find employers so directly.
People at "networking" events are most likely to be there for what they can get out of it personally, and since you have little to offer, I think you will get limited results.

If I wanted a job in Finance, an industry I don't have any connection to, I would ask around sports teams, clubs, churches, extended family, volunteer associations, bargain websites etc. that I am a member of for somebody involved in that area to give me some tips. I might ask if they know anybody involved in hiring for the kind of role I am after, and whether they would be prepared to have a coffee with me for 15mins to discuss ways to improve my chances of getting a job.
Ideally, I would hope to do this a few times with a few different contacts, and if I hit it off with somebody over the coffee, ask them if they have any people they think I should meet etc.

If your current circle of acquaintances is all international students, then I suggest expanding your activities to help grow your circle.

    • Pretty much this. Join a church or spiritual yoga circle or exercise group. Socialise connect network.

    • i never thought of it, will try to do something like that, thank you

  • You could try and go onto Meetup.com and look for finance events in Sydney. Turn up early and try to strike up some conversations. Usually meetups are free and you can learn good things at them. 100% worth giving a shot.

    • sure man, thank for the advice. i will spend some time there
