what did Sri Lanka do differently to USA when USA attacked Iraq?

      • -1

Google sri lankan civil war. Completely different. It's more akin to what happens in corrupt African nations

        • I dont need to google it mate, I was there and I experienced the results of that war. What's your point?

      • Are you serious?

        • Yes, I was born in Sri Lanka, close to the cusp where the war occurred.

    • Better stay at home then because every country has had dark episodes in history:

      Japan: WWII
      Indonesia: East Timor
      China: Tibet
      USA: you know
      and on it goes

Oh wait, we're not so innocent either.

      • Lol of ignorant people here, I suggest you watch the channel 4 documentary

    • better move out of Australia too :-)

  • Can anyone tell me how long a nonstop flight is?

    • Currently you're looking at ~12-13 hours with a stopover in Singapore as the shortest route. Direct flight might be closer to 10 hours

    • +17

Seems about 10 hours. And the service was really good (one time experience with them ). yummy meals and plenty of liquor options. Airport was Okay but not great. A very beautiful country to visit with an interesting history and nature.

      • The food is yummy but there airport is shit. Worst i have ever seen and the smoking room is something words cant explain.

should be better than traveling in AirAsia and probbely feel safer than traveling in Malaysian airways

    • As long as you don't have befriend a NK spy at KL

    • Never hear MH370 and QZ8501 ???

  • I flew there with Airasia. The power went out in the airport 3 times whilst we were trying to go through immigration - and they had to restart the computers each time..

But this is awesome! Can't go wrong with another airline between straya and europe.

Same thing happened to me April last year. Either we were on the same flight, or more likely, it's a regular occurrence.

      • As a Sri Lankan born, I can confirm that power outages are basically a daily occurrence. Even for hotels and the airport

  • Are the people friendly?

    • +23

      it depends, are you friendly?

    • +10

From my experience people are super friendly. Always smile and ready to help. always act like someone they know for a very long time. However, be careful with people who approach you selling stuff especially in popular beaches like Negombo and Unwatina (similar to Thailand).
BTW, in Colombo they speak very good English, much better than other Asian cities. So it is very easy to ask help/communicate. Even outside Colombo it is not hard to find someone who speak in English and ready to help if needed. We found it is very safe country to travel around.

Sri Lanka is a nice place. I went there with Air Lanka (Srilanka Airlines' predecessor). The flight was too long ago to comment on the actual flight, but Sri Lanka itself is very nice place with friendly people.

Having flown Air Lanka, Air India (not sure if they're any good now, but they weren't 20 years ago!), Gulf Air, China Southern etc… I cannot fly with the lower budget ones for longer flights. I'm glad I flew with some of these airlines as I would've been unable to travel as much otherwise but a part of my soul was taken which I can never get back.

    • did you go there 20 years ago? are you sure would it still be good as per your logic

      • Fair point, I guess.

But I have recently looked at the Lonely Planet guide (I'm weird like that) and it looks to still be a nice place.

It depends what you're into, I suppose.

Nice, glad there's a direct option now. Heard it is a great place to visit.

Flew with them 2 years ago. Never ever again.

whats wrong with Srilankan Airlines? last I flew with them, they had newer air crafts than Qantas.
      Service? or Flight or what?

  • On the bucket list is getting the seaplane air pass to travel around sri lanka

    Awesome place!

Amazing beauty and lovely people. Went there with the misses a year ago and loved it. Highly recommend you see it now before they overdevelop and it gets too touristy. It's not a "simple" place to visit if you're planning on seeing a few different areas. Needs a bit of organising trains, transfers etc.

As for Srilanka Airlines, not the best. However, a direct flight for those departing MEL is very convenient.

Spent two months there, great place. Flew air Asia. I'd go back.

  • $849.95 Melbourne to Maldives Return
    Not too bad

As a side note you can also get a business flight from Colombo to London etc on one of the gulf carriers (full flat bed etc) for dirt cheap, I picked up a return for about $1500 on Qatar, so with this flight it would be $2200 to London, half on business
