So where shall I purchase my Surface Pro from at launch?

I have decided it's time to get a new laptop/tablet for upstairs as we haven't really had anything outside the study other than our phones for the past three years. With the new Surface Pro releasing in a little over a week, I figured it would be a great time to get ahead of the tech, and now that its entering its 5th gen, I believe the it will be a much more capable and reliable product.

My question though is where to buy it from? I've noticed HN has 12 months interest free at RRP, JB is selling for a few dollars under RRP, and the Microsoft Store has an education discount. Are these my only options?

If so, I'm thinking direct from MS with the education discount is probably my best bet. I won't save $200-300 in interest over the course of 12 months by keeping the cash in my offset.

I thought I read that Microsoft was opening the floodgates to allow other re-sellers to sell the Surface, but I can't find the new one listed on any other websites for pre-order.

  • Buying at launch is usually the worst time to grab a bargain on a new device. Then again, it's normally the best time to buy the previous generation. What sort of education discount does MS provide?

    • +1

MS don't seem to be reducing the price on the SP4 at all, so it doesn't really hurt to pay release price for the new model.

      • Yes it does hurt. It's a loss. They will lose money because they made a decision based on irrational logic since there are already retailers selling it for less than MS.

      • Yep they only really reduce the price of the surface at the end of its life cycle so there's no point waiting past launch. Education discount is about $300 off the model I'm looking at which is $2300RRP

    • Not necessarily. Might be worth purchasing using a card with "shopper protection".

Check your fees on anything advertised as interest free. They are fee city.

  • I don't think new Surface Pro would let you get ahead of the tech, it's a refresh and I don't think SP4 to new SP is a big leap forward. I think not having USB-C kinda is a bummer as well, since that'd slowly replace USB-As.

I would definitely not buy it on launch, because they've removed fans in i5 models.

    • I'm looking at an i7 model anyway 😊

      • Eh, even still I kinda thought the upgrade to be not that much from Pro 4. That's me though. Skylake vs Kabylake and lack of USB-C probably are two main reasons.

I was going to suggest eBay 20% promotion, but then again, I can't rememeber seeing lots of them with the top end i7 models.

        • Are there ebay resellers?

        • +1

@Putnum: I remember seeing several deals from eBay over the year.

Futu Online, Shopping Express, Dick Smith/Kogan (grey import).
MS has eBay store as well.

        • @Oversimplified: thanks. This sounds like a good option to consider if I can get 20% off $2300, plus cash rewards
