First time deal post! Stores appear to have stock through checking online. Online showing stock ($7.95 delivery).

Been looking at drones for a while. 3DR Solo was always a bit too expensive but Harvey Norman are now discounting the drone and it's accessories.

The drone is $597 (originally $1099).

Now this drone you will need a GoPro for video, an old one at that. Only works with Hero 3, 3+ or 4 but luckily I had a 3+ I never use.

YouTube is a mixed bag of opinions on this drone but a few recent reviews claim it has a good modding commmunity behind it. There are third party parts for it and even a paid-app called Solex which is meant to be a big upgrade over the 3DR one.

      For those of you interested, I have one personally.

      Compared to p4 ? image quality is better on the p4 compared to what i get out of my Hero4 Black.

      Solex is an Android only app which has updates almost every month with new features. 3DR NO LONGER support the app and will not release anymore updates for it, except for when apple does iOS updates.
      They used to be sold at HN for $2500+ not including a gimbal. Reason for the price drop ?

      In the US BestBuy were clearing these off the shelves for about $299 with free batteries, backpacks, propellers, and gimbals.

        Not ideal. I gather you control this using a smart phone? Has the Solex updates improved the performance of this drone? It seems a bit of a gamble when the company has gone bust.

          No and yes.

          Yes and no. Go to the Solex website to understand what Solex does.

          How and when did 3DR go bust? Let me guess your didn't bother reading that article!

          Products like the PixHawk are essentially open source, there is heaps of support for the 3DR products out there.

      they won't ship, you can put your order in, it will get cancelled.

      Im on 3DR SOLO forums from australia and Best Buy b&h etc won't ship them over here, due to the Lithium batteries. :)

    Considering you need to buy a gimbal AND a camera in order to make this usable (several hundred extra at least), why on earth wouldn't you just buy a Phantom 3 for roughly the same amount?

    You don't need a camera or gimbal to make this usable and if you already have a GoPro you only need the gimbal. Why would you buy the Phantom 3 over this?

        What sort of logic is that? They both cost around the same with cameras.

        Why is the drone so 'loose' anyway?

          I think 3dr plus gimbal plus gopro it's a bit more expensive.
          You have to worry about one more battery to charge.
          I hate the camera on the phantom 3 but imo is superior to the gopro 3 considering you can't shot RAW. not sure about the 4.

    what is a good 4K but cheap drone with a good battery life? I think the Max battery life is 20 minutes? How about the height and range?

      Height is limited in Australia and the range is irrelevant. At 60kph with 20 minutes runtime you can cover >20km but you you are limited again in Australia to generally line of sight with some exceptions.

        And what is a good cheap drone? With gimbal and 4k, I guess? Is there anything sub 500? What are useful options, GPS, AUTO LANDING, return to base, … ? Are these normal functions or some do not have these?

          The Xiaomi 4K is around $600 and does pretty much everything you want.

          The 1080P should be a fair bit cheaper now but there are a lot of differences between the two.

          Can't tell you much about the differences as I lost interest in the Xiaomi after the 4K version was delayed for so long.

          3DR gear is great, it's a shame what happened to them and I've used a lot of their gear from the kit X4, Y6 and X8's. Never picked up a solo as I've gone to the Mavic now. If you buy the solo you won't be disappointed at this price.
