Plenty of stock in Perth but do I need another… Hmm nah 3 is enough but cheers lyl :)

    • Are they subjected to the 'memory effect' whereby if kept on charge for too long, they loose capacity? Tried the 2200mAh wired variants and were basically useless in about a month. Might give these ones a go if you haven't experienced such issues.

      • Don't have 3 of these, I mean I have 3 power banks already, so I'm good for now :)

        • Ahh fair enough. In that case, I will hold off.

      • +3

Where have you heard of this "memory effect"? NiCad batteries have a memory effect, but not Li-ion batteries.

Perhaps you are referring to capacity loss? All Li-ion batteries lose capacity gradually, and at about the three-year mark (three years after manufacture) most Li-ion batteries are significantly down compared to their original capacity. It is true that the degradation of the battery is minimized if the battery is charged to no more than 3.92V per cell, but when charged to that voltage, you only get ~60% of the rated power of the battery. So no battery pack does that AFAICT.

Memory effect in NiCad batteries is reversible. Capacity loss in Li-ion batteries is not, unless you have seen some new research?

More on Li-ion capacity loss here: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/capacity_loss

I have a few of the 2200mAh laser power banks. They stopped holding charge after like a month of use. Well, actually it holds charge but a very small amount. That's where I am getting the memory effect from. Because I used to leave them charging overnight so it's "forgotten" some of its capacity. No reference. Just personal experience.

        • @Harshad:

Sounds like the Laser power banks use the cheapest batteries available. Hardly surprising, as they are a discount brand and don't have a reputation to uphold.

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking of buying this, now I've changed my mind.

I just had a look at Laser 2200mAh power banks,do yours look exactly like this:
          http://www.buyincoins.com/item/57916.html

If so, the battery is replaceable. Replace it with a good-quality 18650 battery, and they'll be good again. I recommend you buy Panasonic NCR18650B batteries, they are more expensive, but are considered top-quality batteries.

        • @Russ: Yeah those are the ones I have. My old phone didn't have quick charge so I didn't mind those powerbanks. I have now been spoiled by quick charge and hence no point replacing the cell. Would have replaced it if the old phone was my primary phone. Thanks for the tip though. Will keep it in mind should I find a decent usb-c quickcharge power bank that requires a cell replacement.

        • Would agree. As an example, the battery in my macbook pro has a design rating of 6600 mAh (which it would get when new) and is currently able to charge to 5800 mAh. Still pretty good as that's ~87% of the original value.. and that's after 300 charge cycles and a bit over 5 years..

It's a Li-ion (well, some sort of li-ion polymer..) battery.

      • +1

Shouldn't be. Most of those 2200mAh ones use the cheapest 18650 cells (which quickly drop in capacity), while this uses a flat cell and I doubt it would be subject to the same problems.

  • How is the quality?

    • Shit house according to the comments above.
Although they are talking about other laser products, not this particular product.

      • For 9 bucks, I'll take the Laser risk. ;)

  • don't need one but got one lol…

So the Nexus 4 can be put on top and charged?
Any fire danger with this blowing up?

    • It is possible.

Despite that, I'm getting one. Keep the door open Gerry, your $9 is coming now!

EDIT: scratch that. WHO BRODEN AUBURN STORE??

      • Who me?
        Not me.
I didn't broden the Aubern Store.
        Was it you mr PLANT?

can anyone who got this share their experience?

  • thanks!

  • Thanks OP, got 2

  • Is this allowed on Malaysia Airlines flights?

    • -1

      Change your plane, plz.

      Or

      Google it. :D

    • Yes!

  • Wouldn't the wireless charging be quite slow, if usual power banks are slow anyway?

    • Yes, you also lose some energy as heat, which means that not only are you getting poorer power transfer efficiency but also slower charging.

      • That doesn't sound very OZB

  • Thanks OP, bought one!

  • Hi would this charge a iPad mini to full ?

    • yes. It has less than 6000mah battery in it. Probs around 3000mah

    • +1

i doubt it would, battery packs are never as big as they claim

      • +1

Especially when they quote the capacity of the original cells which 3.6V so it's less at 5V output.

    • +1

      iPad mini 4 has a 5,124mAh battery.
Assuming 80% efficiency for this power bank, it would only charge to 4800mAh. So it would almost charge it fully.

      • +5

I've opened up a few power banks, and the power bank rating was the same as the total rating of all the batteries inside - so it will be 6000mAh at ~3.9V (the average voltage over the entire discharge). That equates to 4680mAh at 5V if the regulator is 100% efficient, which it isn't. Using 80% to 90% as the efficiency gives a likely output power in the range of 3750mAh to 4210mAh.

    • No it wouldn't. Probably half at the most if you're lucky.

The actual mAh capacity of a power bank is smaller because the 3.7 V nominal voltage of its battery has to be boosted to 5 V, and this results in about 10% losses.

Also, power bank capacity is affected by many factors, including ambient temperature, charging current, the health of the bank and the phone's batteries, and the efficiency of your phone's charge regulating circuitry and the battery banks circuitry.

You should aim for a power bank with a mAh rating of at least 25-30% more than the mAh capacity of your smartphone's battery. Something like a 10000mAh would charge it fully and a bit more.

  • dammit… I didn't really need 3 of these… stocking stuffers for xmas I guess…

  • Plenty of stock in/around South and East Sydney. Thanks, OP. Picked up a couple for…errr….because cheap.

  • Can i charge my s7 wirelessly by this powerbank?

  • No longer available

  • +1

Didn't get one, but now that I think of it this is the first time I've seen wireless charging built into the one of these. (I agree it could be one of those handy-but-never-will-use features)

    Hello everyone,
Just a warning to check that the wireless charging works. From the three that I bought 1 was not working properly and was making a weird sound.
