Booking Flights for Christmas to The UK When to Buy?

Hi Guys,

Girlfriend lives in the uk currently working as a teacher and she's going to be with family in Germany for Christmas.

She advised to fly into LHR (Heathrow) and then just use a budget airline to get into stuttgart,

Looking at flights now to London and they're just under $2,000 return if I flew in on the 20th of December and Return for the 3rd of January.

Just wondering when is the best time to book? Should I book now and hope that prices don't go on sale or should I wait it out and see what happens in the next 3 months.

Never flown to europe around christmas and would rather not pay 3.5K for flights return for a 2 week break if possible

Keen to hear anyone's suggestions

Haha we facetime everyday but it's a bit hard not seeing your partner for 8 months straight so I'd rather lose a few grand and spend some time with her.

      • Good man. She must be a keeper ay.

I did a search for those dates on Skyscanner for flights from Sydney to Stuttgart. The cheapest flights are coming in at around $1,585 but that is with some long stop overs. For a bit more money, $1,764, you can fly Etihad from Sydney to Abu Dhabi, then to Paris, and then a budget carrier to Germany. Total trip time is about 28.5 hours each way. This is probably the option I would go for. Etihad is very decent, and the trip time doesn't seem too unreasonable. I personally would book now, I do not see prices getting much cheaper given the busy time of year.

    • Yeah flight to stuttgart were excessively long hence why I was looking at flying to another hub and then just using EasyJet/British Airways for a cheap flight to connect to Germany..

Your flight time to Heathrow will be from 24 to 26 hours. Add in the layover and flight time to Germany and you are probably looking at the same as what I found. For very similar flight times I would go with my cheaper option

        • Your option was the one I was considering currently because like you said it makes sense cost wise/time.

    • "…. then to Paris, and then a budget carrier to Germany. ….."

Alternatively, I think the train from Paris to German destinations is not too long a trip.

Just looked and the train is about 3 and a half hours from Paris similar in terms of cost though.

Might consider it as an option

My god! Have you not read the reviews for these awful Airlines- easy jet are a joke, with crew without personalities, trained only to be completely obnoxious to passengers. The only other ones we have had the unfortunate flying experience with are in the U.S.A. - United & Compass. Plus of course, JetStar here in Aus. - once tried, never to be repeated.
It's a looonggg flight- spend that bit extra for comfort. Also don't forget how cold it will be in both England & Germany - pack all warm clothes & jackets. Rather you than us - that's why we emigrated to Australia in the first place - 30 years ago. Have never had the pull to go back after numerous trips to see friends & family.

    • I'm not really fussed on the short haul flights if I'm perfectly honest, it's more then long distance flights that concern me.

Not phased by the cold, Like I said earlier the trip is mainly so I can spend Christmas/NYE with my partner before she comes back to Australia permanently in April 2018..

      Cheers

  • Well, I think you aim to get cheapest bargain, however talking to this long trip hard to find one. There are several ways to lower the price, 1. flight company direct discount, if you are member of some energy company, you may find they always have promo code for international flight which provide 5-10% off on price. 2. buy points to redeem on your flight, if you are lucky enough, you may able only spend 1500 economy or 2700 business in total of return flight.

Like to offer some help if you need. :)

    • PM me crazygamer if you've got some suggestions, happy to look into all avenues

      Cheers

  • I'd avoid LHR, especially at Christmas.
Why not fly to Frankfurt or Munich for $1600? Short train trip to Stuttgart

    • Haven't locked myself into anything yet, But I'll look into Frankfurt/Munich and see what comes up

      Thanks for the tip :)

  • Have you checked flights to KL/SG and then from there to Europe?

    • I'm guessing something similar to the scoot deal where you fly to SG then one way to europe and transfer? or are you suggesting something else?
