  • Just about to build a house and just started to consider multiple data points. New to this stuff so just quickly read up on it…

So, if I have just read it all correctly, this would sit in the room with my NBN box and router and I connect this to the router and power point, then all data connections from rooms and security cameras (if I get some) go to this.

    Thanks very much.

      Yes correct.

Thanks mate. Never looked at this stuff before. Thanks.

        • Licensed cabler and network engineer here. What I reckon you should do, is dedicate the top of a cabinet somewhere and run everything there, including the phone line/nbn.

In the same cabinet you get a 24 port cat6 patch panel and wire everything from the walls into that.

I would also run a couple of cables from the patch panel to strategic places in the ceiling for a wireless access point. If your house isn't too big, one AP (check out ubiquiti Ac) on each floor should do it.

These wireless access points generally run off a PoE which this switch doesn't provide but you can also use Ac power (get your electrician to install a plug base above the point where the AP is).

Edit: advantage of above is all this Tech stuff is out of sight and every point in your house will be active.

Would also recommend getting good quality stuff so youre not endlessly troubleshooting the setup.

Sorry went from nothing to planning your house for you.

Most decent cameras will use POE which this switch doesn't have . POE = Power Over Ethernet .

      • Ah! OK, so need to research this too. Thanks very much for the replies. Really appreciate it.

True, but it isn't the end of the world. You can get POE injectors which will allow you to 'add in' the POE functionality on a per/port basis. This sort of thing:

        https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-po…

        If you were to compare:

Option 1. Buying a POE capable switch

        vs

Option 2. Buying a switch like this, and the required number of injectors

I think for a lot of people option 2 would work out cheaper. There wouldn't be many home situations were you could warranty a full POE switch.

EDIT: hang on a sec, in the description it says this IS a POE switch!

EDIT2: it isn't super clear from the Netgear does if this does or doesn't have POE, but if I had to guess I'd assume not.

        • @UFO:

Thanks for the confirmation, good to know.

  • the 8 port is on sale too. added it to another item so its above the voucher threshold.

  • My fttp box and router is in the garage but I have one Lan Port inside the house, can I connect this switch in my lan port inside the house to expand the number of ports?

      Literally exactly what this does.
